The region was virtually unknown to the rest of the world two decades before gold prospectors entered the region for the first time finding large populations of colourful people adorned in plumes, shells and ochre. Australian government patrols into the vast mountainous interior followed. Two young men who were both avid photographers captured this era of transition as the indigenous population merged into the Western world. Tony Chadim was pilot for Gibbes Sepik Airways and Ron Blum was a hydrographer collecting data on the rivers of New Guinea. A few years later Tony Chadim joined the Commonwealth Government Department of Works working with Ron Blum on the river flows etc. This book records their collection of images of New Guinea at the time.
