Hardcover. Condition: Very good. [12], 305-755, [1], 164 pages. Errata. Explanations. Tabular data. Index. Part II ONLY. Bookplate of previous owner inside the front cover. No dust jacket present. This register was originally published in August of 1865 "by order of the secretary of war, in compliance with the joint resolution of the senate and house of representatives" by the Adjutant General's Office. This is volume II of a 9 volume set. This volume covers the states of New York and New Jersey. The Official Army register of the volunteer force of the United States army is a multi volume work which covers all the individual non-federal (state) commissioned officers which comprised the bulk of the Union Armies during the Civil War (it covers all four years of the war). A General Index was produced as the ninth volume added to the initial 8 volumes produced after the end of the Civil War. "The Volunteer Army Register lists only the officers of volunteer army units which were mustered into Federal service. Although the Volunteer Army Register is a comprehensive listing of all officers attached to volunteer army units, the set does not list the names of staff officers, aide-de-camps, assistant adjutant generals, paymasters, quartermasters, commissaries of subsistence, and brigade surgeons". United States Volunteers also known as U.S. Volunteers, U.S. Volunteer Army, or other variations of these, were military volunteers called upon during wartime to assist the United States Army but who were separate from both the Regular Army and the militia. Until the enactment of the Militia Act of 1903, the land forces of the United States were divided into three separate and distinctive organizations: The Regular Army, which was the permanent military establishment of the United States in peace and war; The Militia of the several states and territories when called into the service of the United States; and Volunteer forces that the Congress of the United States authorized to be organized for a limited time period as an adjunct to the Regular Army in time of emergencies. Reprint Edition, presumed first printing thus.

Cover has some wear and soiling. Rare surviving copy! Counting "new arrivals' there are about 585 items, many of which have limited presence in various civil war bibliographic works. Dave Zullo and Ron Van Sickle were partners for several years. For a time, they were among the preeminent Civil War and Military booksellers on the East Coast, if not in the Nation. Later they went their separate ways and Ron R. Van Sickle established his separate enterprise. This is believed to be the first catalogue issued by Mr. Van Sickle 'in his own right'. Most entries contain a short descriptive comment or annotation. The American Civil War bibliography comprises books, pamphlets, maps, prints, printed ephemera that deal in large part with the American Civil War. There are over 60,000 books on the war, with more appearing each month. There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to books is more than 50 years old and lists over 6,000 titles. Pencil erasure reside on the back cover.Booksellers ephemera laid in. Contains 300 numbered items. Rare surviving copy. Fascinating compilation of 300 superb examples of 'high end' Civil War literature. Books, maps, pamphlets, limited editions, etc. Ron R. Van Sickle Military Books catalogues set a high standard for clear and informative annotations, most of which have stood the test of time and offer information and insights additional to what might be found in the standard annotated Civil War bibliographical works. Ron R. Van Sickle had been partnered with David Zullo in the early 1980s but they went their separate ways. David Zullo opened The Olde Soldier Books and Ron Van Sickle established this business which endured for a number of years. The Civil War is one of the central events in American collective memory. There are innumerable statues, commemorations, books, and archival collections. The memory includes the home front, military affairs, the treatment of soldiers, both living and dead, in the war's aftermath, depictions of the war in literature and art, evaluations of heroes and villains, and considerations of the moral and political lessons of the war. The last theme includes moral evaluations of racism and slavery, heroism in combat and heroism behind the lines, and issues of democracy and minority rights, as well as the notion of an "Empire of Liberty" influencing the world. The Civil War is one of the most extensively studied and written about episodes in U.S. history. It remains the subject of cultural and historiographical debate. Of particular interest is the persisting myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. The American Civil War was among the first wars to use industrial warfare. Railroads, the electric telegraph, steamships, the ironclad warship, and mass-produced weapons were all widely used during the war. In total, the war left between 620,000 and 750,000 soldiers dead, along with an undetermined number of civilian casualties, making the Civil War the deadliest military conflict in American history. The technology and brutality of the Civil War foreshadowed the coming World Wars.
