Sincerely Conrad Rooks 5/7/1963 / Paris 26 rue Saint Beniot [Benoît]" Ce poème de Conrad Rooks, né dans les vapeurs d'alcool, de peyotl et de champignons hallucinogènes, donnera naissance à l'un des plus importants films de la Beat Generation réalisé par Robert Franck. Aucun exemplaire n'est passé en vente selon RBH. * "desperate now I poured the iodine of whiskey, beer and pastisse, bottles and rivers of liquid fire balm on the spreading cancerous sore . what augury contained in the amber Johny [sic] Walkers and Dewar's White Label" Après la mort soudaine de son père en 1962, Conrad Rooks met fin à une période de dépendance à l'alcool et aux stupéfiants et se rend en Suisse pour une cure de repos qui lui permet de se sevrer. En janvier 1963, il fait imprimer à petit nombre sous les presses de l'athénien Christos Christou ce fameux poème qu'il dédie à la mémoire de son père, riche homme d'affaires. L'enfance opulente de Rooks l'avait vite fait tomber dans l'addiction : "Litte rich boys/ We are all doomed immured in pleasure/ and desire/ there are no Buddhas on Wall Street" écrit-il dans les lignes du poème. Le titre du poème renvoie à la localité de l'État de New York où Rooks a résidé à partir de l'âge de neuf ans. "Chappaqua" serait un mot amérindien désignant un "lieu sacré de l'eau courante", où certaines tribus enterraient leurs morts, ceux-ci disparaissant pour transiter vers un état spirituel : "I have returned to Chappaqua sacred place of Running waters to the swing on the dying old tree Etearnity [sic] is galloping now down Roaring Brook Lane" Un extrait du poème était paru en 1963 dans le premier numéro de la revue grecque d'avant-garde ?? ???? ???? ????? (To allo stin techni, L'Altérité dans l'Art) dirigée par Leonidas Christakis. Rooks vivait alors en Grèce dans un cercle où se trouvaient également, à diverses périodes des années 1960, Sinclair Beiles, Gregory Corso, Harold Norse, Ted Joans, Alan Ansen, Philip Lamantia, John Esam et Dan Richter, et des uvres de ces auteurs paraissaient dans des petites revues proches des Beats (Maria Nikolopoulou "The Transfer andAppropriations of the BeatGeneration in Greece", Beat Literature in a Divided Europe, 2018). Rooks conçoit après le projet de réaliser un film en adaptation de ce poème éponyme. La démarche devait avoir une fonction thérapeutique et l'aider à prévenir toute rechute. En janvier 1964, Rooks entame le tournage de Chappaqua, qui s'étend sur près de trois ans. Le film est financé par l'héritage de son père ainsi que par des emprunts contractés auprès de sa famille et de ses proches, pour un montant total avoisinant 450 000 dollars. Le tournage, largement improvisé, reposait sur une méthode où Rooks se mettait volontairement dans un état de frénésie et de panique afin d'entrer en contact avec sa psyché et ses capacités créatrices ; il filmait selon l'inspiration du moment, parfois sans interruption pendant vingt-quatre heures. Le film a été tourné en France, au Mexique, en Inde, à Ceylan, en Angleterre, ainsi que dans quarante-huit États américains. Parmi les acteurs, outre Rooks qui joue le personnage principal (''Russell Harwick'), on retrouve notamment Jean-Louis Barrault ('Dr. Benoit'), William Burroughs ('Opium Jones'), Allen Ginsberg ('Messie'), Ornette Coleman ('Peyote Eater'), Moondog ('The Prophet'), sur une musique de Ravi Shankar avec la collaboration de Philip Glass.
