Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. Wormley, Godalming, UK: Five Owls Press Ltd, 1973. A beautiful copy the First Edition. BRAND NEW in a BRAND NEW dust jacket. NOT price clipped (£15.00 net). NO chips or tears. NO fading. Only minor rubbing to the jacket (like you sometimes find in any new book store). Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are crisp, clean and unmarked, obviously never read. 1973. First Edition. Illustrated with 35 figures in the text and 35 plates. Tipped-in full color frontispiece. Very useful as well for notes on bindings, printers, booksellers, other publishers, artists, woodcutters, engravers, details on newspaper ads, etc. Bound in the original beige cloth, stamped in bright gold over a maroon panel on the spine. From the dust jacket: "John Newbery is famous among eighteenth-century publishers for the manner in which he exploited the new market for children's books. Both in the creation of a 'list' of successful titles and in his very individual approach to the designing, publicising and selling of his 'little books,' he shows himself to be an important forerunner of the specialist children's book publisher. In this bibliographical study of the publishing activity of John Newbery and his successors, Sydney Roscoe has been at pains to supply as complete a record as possible of these children's books in their various editions, with notes on the location of copies known today. He has also provided a detailed Introduction, giving the background to the firm's work, together with three important appendices on special problems that have arisen in compiling the bibliography. A title checklist is included too of the many books for adults with whose publication the firm is known to have been associated. The volume is illustrated with 35 text figures and 32 pages of plates, many of which show Newbery's characteristic style of address in the composition of title pages. A colour frontispiece reproduces the ornamental Dutch paper with which so many of Newbery's children's books were 'prettily bound and gilt'." . First Edition. Hardcover. New/New. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. 492pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. NOT a library discard (illustrator).…

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first separate edition of this essay, which was originally printed in a 1955 issue of the periodical 'The Book Collector'. This copy inscribed on the upper wrapper "with the author's compliments S.T. 16.7.75", and also with the year of the original Book Collector appearance added in ink. Slim 8vo. 7pp stapled into lettered wrappers. Illustrated with three plates. The staple rusted, and with a touch of light spotting to the wrapper margins. A very good copy of this offprint of Roscoe's important bibliographic essay, where he assigns titles to Marhsall's originally untitled miniature children's books ('The Infant's Library' is one of the earliest and most famous examples of a miniature library designed specifically for children). [A light item, UK postage will be reduced]. Inscribed by Author(s).…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. [ROSCOE, SYDNEY]. Thomas Bewick: A Bibliography Raisonne of Editions of the General History of Quadrupeds, The History of Quadrupeds, The History of British Birds and the Fables of Aesop, Issued in his Lifetime. London: Geoffrey Cumberlege/ Oxford University Press, 1953. FIRST EDITION. Leather-bound; hardcover; octavo (24.5 x 15 x 2 cm); pp. xxx, 198, [1]. English text. Handsomely bound in half morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe; cloth sides; t.e.g.; half-title; facsimiles throughout; appendices and index. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure. A few small scuff marks to spine. Interior very well-preserved. An excellent copy of the standard work on Bewick. Notes: From the blurb: 'This work attempts a full bibliography of editions of the General History of Quadrupeds, the History of British Birds, and the Fables of Aesop published by Thomas Bewick in his lifetime (1753-1828), together with collected editions of proofs of cuts issued in book form in that period. Up to the present there has been none such: standard works such as Hugo's Bewick Collector (1866-8) and Bell's Catalogue (1851) are neither complete nor accurate, while the Catalogue of the Pease Collection at Newcastle (1904) deals only with that collection. Full bibliographic specifications are given covering, as far as possible, every issue of every edition, and notes on each edition deal with its production and publication and any special relevant problems. There is a general introduction to the whole subject. All title-pages are reproduced, for the most part in full size, as well as prospectuses for first editions, 'thumb-mark' receipts, and certain of the woodcuts. Appendixes deal with, among other things, Advertisements, the Collected Edition of 1822, the New York (1804) pirated edition of the Quadrupeds, and the successive states of the figures of quadrupeds and birds.'.…
