The contributions, drawn from an international gathering of physicists and engineers, cover the theoretical foundations and experimental investigation of electronic transitions between quantised energy levels confined within nanometre-scale semiconductor layers. The contents address the quantum mechanical behaviour of electrons in heterostructure potential wells, optical absorption and emission processes associated with intersubband transitions, and the nonlinear optical properties arising from engineered asymmetries in well geometry. A significant portion of the volume is devoted to device applications, particularly infrared photodetectors based on quantum well structures, which were at that time transitioning from laboratory curiosities to practical detection systems for thermal imaging and related technologies. Co-edited with Borge Vinter, then at Thomson-CSF's central research laboratory, and Barry Levine of AT&T Bell Laboratories, the volume brought together European and American research programmes that were pursuing complementary approaches to quantum well device physics. Rosencher's own pioneering work on asymmetric quantum wells, which demonstrated second-order optical nonlinearities forbidden in symmetric structures, contributed directly to the infrared detector technologies now widely deployed in defence, surveillance and scientific instrumentation. The volume remains a foundational reference for the physics underpinning quantum well infrared photodetectors and, more recently, quantum cascade lasers and detectors that have extended intersubband device concepts into the terahertz regime.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the 'Intersubband Transistions in Quantum Wells' held in Cargese, France, between the t 9 h and the 14th of September 1991. The urge for this Workshop was justified by the impressive growth of work dealing with this subject during the last two or three years. Indeed, thanks to recent progresses of epitaxial growth techniques, such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, it is now possible to realize semiconductor layers ( e.g. GaAs) with thicknesses controlled within one atomic layer, sandwiched between insulating layers (e.g. AlGaAs). When the semiconducting layer is very thin, i.e. less than 15 nm, the energy of the carriers corresponding to their motion perpendicular to these layers is quantized, forming subbands of allowed energies. Because of the low effective masses in these semiconducting materials, the oscillator strengths corresponding to intersubband transitions are extremely large and quantum optical effects become giant in the 5 - 20 ~ range: photoionization, optical nonlinearities, . Moreover, a great theoretical surprise is that - thanks to the robustness of the effective mass theory - these quantum wells are a real life materialization of our old text book one-dimensional quantum well ideal. Complex physical phenomena may then be investigated on a simple model system.

Optoelectronics, first published in 2002, is a practical and self-contained graduate-level textbook on the subject, which will be of great value to both advanced engineering students and practising engineers. Sophisticated concepts are introduced in a practical and coherent way, including such topics as quantum mechanics of electron-photon interaction, quantisation of the electro-magnetic field, semiconductor properties, quantum theory of heterostructures and nonlinear optics. The book builds on these concepts to describe the physics, properties and performances of the main optoelectronic devices: light emitting diodes, quantum well lasers, photodetectors, optical parametric oscillators and waveguides. Emphasis is placed on the unifying theoretical analogies of optoelectronics, such as equivalence of quantisation in heterostructure wells and waveguide modes, entanglement of blackbody radiation and semiconductor statistics. The book concludes by presenting devices including vertical surface emitting lasers, quantum well infrared photodetectors, quantum cascade lasers and optical frequency converters.
