Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The Mapleson Memoirs. Old sellotape mark to end inside cover. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. In his memoirs, originally published in 1888, Mapleson relates his experiences in managing opera in England and the United States, often amusing, sometimes far-fetched, but always fascinating. He recreates a vivid picture of operatic conditions in London between 1858 and 1888, a periid when his own enterprise at Her Majesty's Theatre and Drury Lane was faced with the Royal Italian Opera at Covent Garden under the management of his rival, Frederick Gye. He takes us behind the scenes, revealing the intrigues there were at that time; he gives us a most entertaining account of the behaviour of the various prima donnas whom he engaged. We read how he beat Covent Garden at the post, and procured the first production rights for England of Faust and Carmen; and about his schemes for building a national opera house on the site which is now occupied by New Scotland Yard. These famous Memoirs have been edited and fully annotated by one of the leading operatic historians and critics of today - Harold Rosenthal. The result is an entertaining and informative book, that should appeal to both the opera enthusiast and the general reader. Illustrated. 346 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…
