Mr. Ross Pope was an assistant to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Related Agencies Appropriations subcommittee of congressman. Mr. Pope sailed and his colleagues set off on trips around the world to meet with politicians, dignitaries, and farmers whom the project served. On these trips, year after year. alongside U.S. Representatives and fellow staff members, he traveled to England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, India, Turkey, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Jordan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Formosa, Israel, India, Japan, Korea, Egypt, Morocco, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela. Cuba, etc. Mr. Pope's documents of the department's travel between 1949-1967 are held in four binders. These diligently curated travel logs contain photographic evidence, official reports, trip itineraries, classified documents, handwritten invitations from ambassadors, letters, maps, newspaper clippings, booklets, souvenirs, and more. Pope and company are photographed with SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) in Belgium, with youth farmers in Thailand, at barley distribution centers in Morroco, among farmers in Nairobi, outside of a mosque in Omar, surveying diplomats and doctors in Mexico, on a Mediterranean cruise, and elsewhere. In total there are 170 photographs. This extensive collection of material is held across four three-ring binders. Binders measure: 10 1/2" x 11 1/2". Collectively there are roughly 200 leaves/400 pages of information. The reports detail the economic condition, agricultural phase, and militaristic capacity of the geographical study area. These reports analyze progress and production for NATO, and constitute U.S. intervention moving forward. Of support for Israel, one report reads: "The U.S. can never hope to relieve itself of its financial burden here, nor can the nation of Israel ever hope to prosper, until its basic industry - agriculture - is strengthened to provide a sound economic base for its future development." Aside from studying agricultural progress, the committee pursued health and safety control including studying virus transmission and inoculation/immunization. Another predominant feature of these world tours for the Agricultural Department was to pursue objectives of mutual interest, trade deals, and social amenities (paraphrased from the report on Latin America, 1957). There are newspaper clippings from The Daily Star Beirut, Lebanon, the Syrian Post, and The Jerusalem Post all from Oct. 1953 regarding the Appropriations subcommittee for Agriculture staff. This is a large travel log of one man's global, politically influential career as a staff member on the subcommittee of the U.S. Agricultural Department. In great condition.
