The 'characters' are: Viscount St. Cyres; W.R. Morfill; Friedrich Max Muller; Earl Beauchamp; James A. H. Murray; J. Conway-Rees; Hartwell De La Garde Grissell; Professor Margoliouth; James Hearn; Arthur Sidgwick; and Joseph Wells. (James A. Murray was the editor of what is now known as the Oxford English dictionary.).

Sewn binding. Condition: Good +. First Edition (proof). Folio, 28 leaves. 12 lithographed portraits with descriptions of the subjects on the other leaves. Number 45 of 55 hand-numbered copies of the proofs, issued in the publishers green sewn wrappers. Wrappers chipped and worn with some loss and beginning to come apart from the… text, though still holding quite well. Internally bright, crisp, and clean and without any soiling or staining. Overall, a good or better example, much prettier on the inside than out. Quite an uncommon item, even more so in the limited proof state.
