Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE SWAMPS A RECORD OF PIONEER DAYS IN THE MIDDLE WEST SIGEL ROUSH 1929 1ST. I had some trouble finding this book online because apparently this was the Author s first and only full-length book although he had published many articles for the newspapers of his day. Please find: The Swamps A Record of Pioneer Days in the Middle West by Sigel Roush. This small hard cover book (5 ĵ x 8 inches 321 pages) was published by the Shenandoah Publishing Company of Strasburg Virginia dated 1929 and the First Edition (same date on title & copyright pages). The book is bound in orange boards with black titles on cover and spine. The book contains stories of the Author s boyhood and tales told in his family about hunting-trapping & fishing and rural life in general in Highland County Ohio an area then known apparently as The Swamps . The Author s Foreword says: "These sketches are founded on fact and fiction. Mostly fact. All are potentially true. The characters are all real, though they are presented under assumed or altered names". The author eventually became a prominent dentist in Troy, New York and was quite a world traveler too. This book includes a newspaper clipping offering a book review of this book. It is also signed The Author on the front endpaper. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The covers are toned and soiled although it is not clear how and why. There has also been some bumping to the corners and spine tips and there is a small split developing along the upper portion of the front gutter. Inside, as mentioned, there is an inscription by the author and a paste-down newspaper clipping which has stained the opposite side of the endpaper (please see the photos). Beyond that the interior pages are clean and bright without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Signed by Author.

The author, drawing on a rich tapestry of family history and local lore, weaves together fact and fiction to create a vivid portrait of life in this untamed wilderness. Through the eyes of the Rudolph family, pioneers who settled in the Swamps at the turn of the last century, we witness the challenges and triumphs of those who dared to tame this unforgiving land. The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of dense forests, treacherous bogs, and encounters with both wild animals and equally wild men. The stories, passed down through generations, are filled with dramatic struggles for survival, where encounters with wolves, bears, and other creatures were commonplace. The author's evocative descriptions transport readers to a time when life was a constant battle against the elements, and where resilience and resourcefulness were essential for survival. Beyond the thrilling adventures, the book explores deeper themes of family, community, and the enduring human spirit. It delves into the complex relationships between the settlers and the Native Americans who once inhabited the region, as well as the evolving social dynamics as civilization gradually encroached upon the wilderness. The author's insights into the lives of these early pioneers offer a profound reflection on the sacrifices made and the legacy left by those who shaped the American frontier. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
