| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, illustrated with 6 folding plates at the end of the volume (cf. 1 vol. in-4° (270 x 219 mm) de : [3] ff. 1 vol. 4to (270 x 219 mm) of : [3] ff. (false title, title, dedication); 86 pp. (including table). Contemp. cardboard bradel-style covered with red paper, gilt filet framing the plates, spine decorated with fillets, black morocco title piece. Original edition of this reference work on the history of naval tactics due to La Rouvraye after the wars of the Revolution and the Empire. This type of publication dealing with secret and confidential subjects was printed in small numbers and reserved for the navy and the admiralties, hence its rarity. Naval tactics is "the art of leading ships into combat, and of handling them in relation to each other, either in single combat or in squadrons, is the part of our profession which must attract the full attention of the military officer [.]" [translated from French] (p.1). In France, it is the work of Father Paul Hoste (1652-1700): "L'Art des armées navales [.]" (1697) which founded this military art which took on considerable importance in the 18th century. Published a century later, the present work which updates the subject is the fruit of the important experience in the French navy of Charles-Louis Victor de La Rouvraye (1783-1850). Between 1801 and 1802, this naval officer served as a midshipman on the corvette "Cigogne" and then embarked on the frigate "Furieuse" in Santo Domingo and on the frigate "Libre". As a ship's ensign from 1803 to 1804, he was sent to the flotilla of Boulogne as commander of a section of gunners with whom he took part in battles (notably against the English). In 1805, he embarked on the frigate "Canonnière" and served in the Indian Ocean. Taken prisoner at False Bay in South Africa in 1806, he was brought back to England. In 1811, he was released for having saved the crew of a British ship. Promoted to Lieutenant, he commanded a brig in Boulogne, then served in Cherbourg on the "Iphigénie" (1813) before commanding another brig in 1814 in Brest. Rich of all this experience at sea and in combat, La Rouvraye published in 1815 his present "Traité sur l'art des combats en mer". The work deals with the art of naval battles, the principles for maneuvering and commanding naval armies, embossed squadrons and signals. The illustration is composed of 6 engraved folding plates representing the diagrams of the various naval tactics explained in the book. A superb full-margined copy of this text printed on wove paper and preserved in its original elegant cardboard box. Rare on the market.
