Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Near fine condition glossy color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Preface; Foreword; Introduction; Acknowledgments; Contributors to the Catalogue; Notes on the Entries; Index of Artists; and Concordance by Acession Numbers. Profusely illustrated with both black-and-white and color photographs. This catalogue was published on the occasion of an exhibition at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri October 14 - December 6, 1987. "The Trustees of The William Rockhill Nelson Trust began in the spring of 1930 to assemble works of art from around the world for a museum which at the time existed only on the architects' blueprints. When on December 11, 1933 its magnificent doors were opened to the public, Nelson's dream of creating an art museum for his adopted hometown finally had been fulfilled - nearly twenty years after his death. Today "the Colonel's" legacy lives on: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has grown to become one of the largest institutions of its kind in the United States, its collections world famous for both their scope and quality. Outstanding works of art of remarkable diversity continue to be acquired, as evidenced by A Bountiful Decade: Selected Acquisitions 1977-1987. The exhibition focuses on just 116 notable objects chosen from the more than 2200 acquisitions made during the last decade. The exhibition and its catalogue are tangible proof that the philanthropic spirit of William Rockhill Nelson and Mary Atkins lives on in Kansas City. The selection of works included in the show was made by Marc F. Wilson, Director and Chief Curator of Oriental Art. The exhibition was organized, and the catalogue was compiled and edited, by Dr. Roger Ward, Associate Curator of European Art." - from the rear outer cover.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Ranked by many scholars as the greatest master of early Italian Renaissance painting, Masaccio (1401-1428) was the first artist to use effects of light to create three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional plane. This achievement, revolutionary in Masaccio's day, is one of the painter's significant contributions to art history. This book explores Masaccio's accomplishment as epitomized by the multipaneled painting of which the Saint Andrew panel is thought to have once formed a part: the Pisa Altarpiece, one of the truly great polyptychs in the history of Italian Renaissance art, produced in 1426 for a chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, Pisa. The text discusses Masaccio's short life and illustrious career; the commission for the altarpiece; its patron and program; the painting's original location; and the role that the church friars played in the actual commission. Finally, after examining the polyptych's individual panels, the book traces their subsequent history and recounts how art historians came to identify them.…
