Nancy Cock, apparently a "Clear Starcher" (or was this a euphemism for her activities?) The drawing/painting is brightly coloured, no fading. It has a thin line at edges of once having been behind card or glass, now free of any adhesion. Watermarked laid/railed paper dated 1811 with fleur-de-lys cartouche also in the weave. two small nicks at left hand edge, tiny edge sliver. Measures 6 x 9 inches (15 x 22.5 cm) *Notes: This image matches one that also resides in the National Gallery of Art. Their example is slightly less coloured and a few line changes here and there. There example does NOT have any signature but is fully attributed to Rowlandson. I think this is the finished drawing/caricature finished work having been signed.**NOTE: The only thing on the character "Nancy Cock" is one of there being a child's rhyme figure from the 1740's who is a maid and a "type". So is the inference one of a lady of loose morals help to put some "starch" into her customers? Signed by Illustrator(s).

A very good or better set, in a handsome signed binding by Riviere and Son. First edition (later issue) of this imitation of Pierce Egan's Life in London (1821). While sometimes attributed to Egan, the work was possibly written by John Badcock. "Out of the sixty-five imitations of it which Egan stated that he had reckoned, the most important was Real Life in London. which was published in sixpenny numbers in 1821, with excellent illustrations by Heath, Alken, Dighton, Rowlandson and others. Real Life in London is a pleasanter book than its prototype. Some have held that Egan wrote it; but the author had a purer style, a cleaner mind and a wider knowledge of London than Egan" (The Cambridge History of English and American Literature). "From a bibliographical point of view, one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published, rivaling Pickwick in the tangle of variant states that exist both in text and plates. The work had a tremendous success, probably out-rivaling in popularity its prototype. A difficult feature of the book is that two printers. printed copies, textually the same page by page, with only minor variations in the settings, and this, coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being reprinted, makes the whole vast output all 'first editions' but with innumerable states and variants that continually overlap one with the other" (Abbey). "Originally published in 56 parts, on completion the work was issued in boards. Later copies were bound in publisher's cloth. A book full of contrarities and difficulties for the bibliographer, there being innumerable variations of the plates. The difficulties are further increased by many copies in modern bindings having been completed or made up of different issues giving combinations that are not true variations" (Tooley). Printers: R. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street (vol. 1); A. Applegath Stamford-street (vol. 2). Add to basketOriginal watercolour, signed on the bottom left corner; mounted, framed and glazed, frame gilt and rubbed; image size: 11.5 x 18.7 cm, framed size: 30.2 x 36.4 cm. A watercolour sketch by Rowlandson of an aquatint illustration for 'The History of Johnny Quae Genus, the Little Foundling of the Late Doctor Syntax' by William Combe. The poem was first published in 1821 and illustrated by 24 coloured aquatints by Rowlandson, and describes in humorous tone the adventures of Doctor Syntax and his little foundling Johnny Quae Genus. Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was an English artist, caricaturist and engraver, considered one of the most influential graphic artists of his time. A prolific artist, he left at least sixty graphic works depicting Jews, many of which are anti-semitic in nature and look overtly-racist even by the standards of his time. Rowlandson used to visit the Rag Fair market in Houndsditch, where he would often make sketches of London's Jewish poor. Images of Jews in Rowlandson's caricatures tend to be derogatory, the subjects portrayed as moneylenders, stockjobbers, sexual predators and pedlars. Rowlandson was a contemporary of such artists as James Gillray, the Cruikshanks, Matthew Darly and Robert Dighton, all active in the period that is considered 'the Golden Age of British Caricature' (lasting from 1770 to the time of George IV's death in 1830).

Third edition. A presentation copy from William Combe inscribed: "To Miss Emily Gouldsmith, with the affectionate regards of the Author." Additionally, Combe has written and initialed a short sonnet for Miss Gouldsmith: "As Gilead's plant in ev'ry season gives | Its balmy fragrance to the ambient air; | And still continues while its foliage lives | To yield its inexhausted perfume there; | So may those charms which in life's early day, | Please the chaste eye and wake the feeling heart, | Continue still through Life's protracted day | From youth to age their virtues to impart. | And when you read, within the Muse's page, | O may My Memory soothe your gentle breast; | Whether I still tread Life's long, ling'ring stage; Or in the peaceful tomb my ashes rest." Given many years later by Emily Gouldsmith to Lady Helen Filmer. A modern full red morocco binding with raised bands, gilt titling and gilt inner dentelles. Complete with frontispiece, title page and 29 additional plates, all engraved by Rowlandson and hand colored. Binding in Fine condition with trivial bumps to the corners. Internal contents are generally excellent, but with the occasional spot or tanning to a page. The first book in the Dr. Syntax trilogy and the first work illustrated by Rowlandson to gain widespread recognition. Rowlandson's trademark caricature style blended perfectly with Combe's sarcastic wit. The author and illustrator worked in collaboration to create a biting mockery of the prevalent travelogue, in fashion among many of their contemporaries. Dr. Syntax, first published serially in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine, would become immensely popular with English readers in the early 19th century. Extremely scarce presentation copy, surprisingly underrepresented in the auction record where we can trace only a few examples of Combe's ink. Signed.
