In 1822 Richard Martin MP sponsored the passage of the Animal Protection Act which outlawed cruelty to cattle, horses and sheep. This was the world's first ever anti-cruelty law. In 1824 the SPCA - Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed. It received the backing of four Members of Parliament, including Richard Martin and William Wilberforce who was well-known for his fight to end slavery in the British colonies. The Society was the first animal welfare organisation in the world. It was also the first law enforcement agency in the UK. It was not until two years later that Britain's first police force was formed. During the first year of its existence, the Society achieved 149 convictions on charges of cruelty to animals. In 1840 Queen Victoria gave the SPCA her permission to be named the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the trend for animal charities soon spread worldwide! Today's RSPCA has 309 inspectors investigating over 100,000 cruelty complaints a year in England and Wales and bringing perpetrators of cruelty to justice. RSPCA inspectors also undertake thousands of animal rescues, collections and establishment visits. Brown illustrated hardback cloth cover.

Add to basketHarry Rowntree (illustrator). Hardcover (with dust jacket). Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket: Good. 340pp + 4pp publisher's advertisements. Aesop's Fables, retold by Blanche Winder, published by Ward, Lock & Co., Limited [1925]. Illustrated with 48 colour plates by Harry Rountree. From the series of Prince Charming Colour Books for Children. Aesop's Fables' are a collection of fables credited to the Greek fabulist and storyteller Aesop, who was believed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. Whilst his existence remains unclear and no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling oral tradition, containing similar themes and characters, such as speaking animals and inanimate objects that often display human characteristics. This beautifully illustrated early 20th century edition is undated but is believed to be 1925 and is especially sought after for Rountree's vivid animal artwork and striking illustrated endpapers. Unlike many traditional fable books of the period, the illustrations feel unusually dramatic and atmospheric ? filled with blazing skies, mountain landscapes, watchful animals, and richly coloured scenes throughout. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Collated, complete with forty-eight colour plates by the prolific and celebrated British illustrator Harry Rountree. With charming, coloured endpapers also illustrated by Harry Rountree. Bound in blue cloth with black title to front and spine. Slight fading to spine and extremities. Head and tail bumped. Wear to dust jacket, including chipping and loss to some edges and tail of spine. Rubbing, nicks and small tears to edges of DJ. Colours are still bright. Not price clipped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clear with no annotations. All plates are collated and present. Beautiful pictorial endpapers. Additional photographs are available upon request. Add to basketCloth. Condition: Good. Harry Rowntree; Rene Bull (illustrator). An illustrated copy of Joel Chandler Harris' controversial stories. This edition of Uncle Remus is illustrated with numerous in-text line drawings by Rene Bull, and twelve colour plates by Harry Rowntree, collated and complete. Joel Chandler Harris published seven uncle Remus books which he compiled and adapted African American folktales and framing them within a plantation context. Harris also chose to write the stories in his interpretation of Deep South African American Language. Due to these framing devices and stylistic choices, the collection has garnered a lot of controversy since their publication. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. The inscription reads, 'love and best wishes for Christmas and New Year 1943. From Auntie Lina and Uncle Arthur'. Undated. Dated using JISC from the estimations of the British Library. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, which are a little grubby to the bottom edge. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine. The cloth is beginning to fray to the tail, and there is a small centimetre long tear in the cloth at the front joint near the tail. The front hinge is starting, but firm, whilst the rear hinge is starting and is a rather tender. Internally, the binding is generally firm, with some strain at points. Pages are bright with some light handling marls and the occasional patch of light foxing. Good. book.
