Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 331 pp. with B/W illustrations. Slight edgewear and rubbing. "This book addresses a simple question: how did the rual transformation of the mid-twentieth-century affect farm famlies in general, and conservative, ethnic, and religious communities in particular? By beginning the study w…ith a single Mennonite denomination located at two sites [Meade, Kansas and Steinbach, Manitoba] in the North American grassland and in two countries this book attempts to interpret the complex, disparate, and disjunctured transnational worlds of the twentieth century. Perhaps rural society became fragmented, but by following those scattered fragments along their various paths, one also begins to understand the resilience and ingenuity of humans as they recrafted and regrounded their worlds.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; spine straight and uncreased; very minimal wear; The history of the 20th century is one of modernization, a story of old ways being left behind. Many traditionalist Mennonites rejected these changes, especially the automobile, which they regarded as a symbol of pride and…individualism. They become known as the "horse-and-buggy" people. Between 2009 and 2012, Royden Loewen and a team of researchers interviewed 250 Mennonites in thirty-five communities across the Americas about the impact of the modern world on their lives. This book records their responses and strategies for resisting the very things - ease, technology, upward mobility, consumption - that most people today take for granted.

Paperback. Condition: New. In 1874, a group of nine hundred Mennonites migrated from Russia to the western plains of Canada and the United States, settling in and around Steinbach, Manitoba, and Jansen, Nebraska. This social hsitory shows how these conservative, German-speaking farm families adapted to an increasingly urbanized…and industrialized world. Royden Loewen examines how the men and women of this immigrant group decised strategies to maintain familiar social structures and cultural patters within a changing society. Because these Mennonites were highly literate, leaving a rich array of diaries, letters, and memoirs, their everyday lives and ethnic self-perceptions can be reconstituted in detail. Loewen's account tells of three generations of Mennonites for whom the farm family was the primary social unit. The sectarian, lay-oriented church congregation interpreted life's meaning and enforced strict social boundaries on the community level. These traditionalist were coupled with a sensitive adaptation to the market economy of the outside world.
