L'Anti-Espagnol, pièce parue cette même année 1590, est une pièce d'Antoine Arnauld l'Avocat (père du Grand Arnauld) dénonçant les visées hégémoniques de Philippe II contre la France.L'historien lyonnais Claude de Rubys (1533-1613), qui fut aussi avocat, conseiller au Présidial de Lyon, se montra l'un des plus ardents partisans de la Ligue (c'est lui qui avait rédigé en 1589 les articles de l'Union jurée par les échevins).
