Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of this fascinating work on the life and work of Sir Christopher Wren. With over one hundred illustrations, including his designs of St. Paul's Cathedral. Published on the bicentenary of his death, this memorial volume on Sir Christopher Wren offers a wealth of insight into the architect's life and work. A first edition of this volume, with 12 colour plates, and ninety monochrome plates, including four folding plates, collated and complete. Wren was a leading proponent of the English Baroque, an architectural style that his manifested in his masterpiece; St. Paul's Cathedral. The cathedral was one of fifty churches Wren was responsible for rebuilding after the Great Fire of London in 1666, and this interesting volume includes the designs of St. Paul's Cathedral, and Pembroke Chapel, Cambridge, as well as chapters on Wren's personal life, and his contributions to astronomy, and biological sciences. With facsimiles of letters penned by Wren to the front and rear pastedowns. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding with the Wren coat of arms in gilt to the front board. Externally, generally smart. The cloth has faded to the front board and the spine, but is brighter to the rear board. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the joints and the spine, with some very light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Aside from some offsetting to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
