Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second printing, issued by John Murray in December 1905, only one month after the first printing of November 1905. A substantial contemporary collection of essays on the political, economic, strategic and cultural problems of the British Empire at the opening of the tw…entieth century, edited and introduced by Charles Sydney Goldman, with Rudyard Kipling's poem "The Heritage." Complete with all seven maps, including the folding maps. This is an association copy from the library of the British philosopher Guy Cromwell Field (1887-1955). The front free endpaper bears his faint contemporary ownership inscription, "G. C. Field, March 1906." Field had won a History scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, and went up in October 1905, only weeks before the original publication of this volume and two months before the present December reprinting. The copy also retains the original B. H. Blackwell bookseller's ticket from 50 & 51 Broad Street, Oxford, on the front pastedown, placing its early ownership firmly within the Oxford bookselling world in which Field was then studying. The chronology is unusually precise: the book appeared in this printing in December 1905 and was in Field's possession by March 1906, during his first academic year at Balliol. Field subsequently became a prominent British academic philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bristol. The conjunction of his dated inscription, his documented arrival at Balliol in October 1905, and the contemporary Blackwell ticket provides a coherent and unusually well-contextualised record of ownership. Original blue cloth with an exceptionally attractive pictorial upper board, elaborately decorated in gilt and colours with imperial globes, flags, anchors, crown and other emblematic devices. The front board remains notably beautiful and well preserved: the colours retain considerable richness, the gilt remains strong and sharply defined, and the elaborate design has survived with striking visual impact for a large volume of this age. Moderate rubbing and edge wear are present, though the decorative upper board remains one of the strongest features of the copy. The spine is darker than the front board, with rubbing, minor scuffing and some fraying at the head and foot; the gilt lettering remains clear and bright. The rear board shows ordinary age-related rubbing and surface marking. The binding remains sound. Internally, the volume is generally clean and well preserved, with light age-toning and some foxing principally to the endpapers and preliminary leaves. The text pages are substantially cleaner. The ownership inscription is faint but legible. All seven maps are present and complete, including the folding maps, which retain good definition and colour. Published at a moment when imperial administration, defence, communications, commerce and political identity occupied a central position in British public life, The Empire and the Century remains a substantial contemporary record of Edwardian imperial thought. The association with Guy Cromwell Field is particularly apposite: he arrived at Oxford as a History scholar at precisely the moment the book appeared, and his dated inscription establishes his ownership during his first year at Balliol. Complete with all seven maps, including folding maps (illustrator).
