Sheet Music
Soft cover. Condition: Good. Some edgewear and a few closed tears, otherwise quite good - the music is clean and legible. Pianoforte score with lyrics. VERY HARD TO FIND in any condition. Piano and lyrics. The title translates roughly from Yiddish as "Woe to the Child Who Lacks a Mother." The song comes from the operetta Di leybedigeh yesoymim ("The Living Orphans"), and the sheet music cover states it was "as produced at Adler's Peoples Theatre." The Composer: Joseph Rumshinsky (1881-1956) Joseph Rumshinsky was a Jewish composer born near Vilna, Lithuania (then part of Russian Poland). Along with Sholom Secunda, Alexander Olshanetsky, and Abraham Ellstein, he is considered one of the "big four" composers and conductors of American Yiddish theater. He was a child prodigy who developed the nickname "Yoshke der notn-freser" ? little Joseph, the devourer of music. He moved to America in 1904, and after being invited to New York by theater impresario Boris Thomashefsky, Rumshinsky helped upgrade Yiddish musical theater from a series of vaudeville-type skits into a true operetta form. In New York he worked at Malvina Lobel's Royal Theater from 1913 to 1914, and at Joseph Edelstein's Peoples Theater from 1914 to 1916 - the very venue where Weh dem Kind was staged.Stella Adler was born February 10, 1902 in New York City, the youngest daughter of Jacob P. and Sara Adler, the foremost actors of the Yiddish stage at the turn of the century. She was enlisted in her father's troupe as a toddler ? at age four she took the part of one of the young princes in Shakespeare's Richard III, and at age nine she played the young Spinoza. So the sheet music represents a remarkable confluence: a song of Jewish immigrant longing, composed by the dean of Yiddish theater music, performed by a young woman who would go on to reshape American acting itself ? all staged at the theater run by her legendary father, Jacob P. Adler.
