Photographs of 75 Hamadan rugs, each shown from the front plus a small back detail, and attributed to specific villages or districts. The rest is introductory text on how rugs were made there: village production, local types, and social context. Runge draws in part on letters from Hamadan by Clara Case Edwards (wife of rug scholar A. Cecil Edwards). There are technical notes as well. Hamadan output was huge and often treated as cheap commercial work. Rungeâs point is that the region also produced many strong, well-made village rugs that collectors have undervalued. The introductory text describes the sociology of rug production in this area, based partly on letters from Hamadan by Clara Case Edwards (A.Cecil Edwards' wife), and then goes over rug types from the various villages in the Hamadan area; the text is interesting.
