From Preface: Much research and writing remains to be done on Spain's participation in the American Revolution. Most of the work on the Revolution is concerned almost entirely with what happened on the Eastern Seaboard in the American Colonies. The war on the Georgia-Florida frontier and the conflict between Great Britain and Spain on the Gulf Coast and the lower Mississippi Valley, as well as the history of the Caribbean area during the 18th century, much of which pertains to important phases of the great colonial empires in the western hemisphere, have never been adequately treated. Until this research is done, the military history of the American Revolution and the 18th century history of the Caribbean region will be far from complete. This volume is being published as a chapter in the heretofore untold story of a very important battle of the American Revolution; a battle which may have been the turning point in the war; a battle which was fought entirely by soldiers and sailors none of whom wore an American uniform. It is the only battle of the Revolution with a contemporary, separately published account written by the commanding officer in charge. All historians who have been concerned with Spanish colonial activities are thankful for the great national archives of Spain and Great Britain with their tons of unpublished materials dealing with the history of America. In particular they are grateful to the Spanish people for their seemingly ceaseless writing of and accumulation of such papers. Historical researchers also know from first hand experience that Spain has provided little guidance to these infinite riches of her manuscript treasures of early American history. Although American scholars have provided some valuable aids of their own such as Roscoe Hill's Descriptive Catalogue of the Documents Relating to the History of the United States in the Papeles Procedentes de Cuba Deposited in the Archivo General de Indias at Seville, it is still necessary to examine the Spanish manuscript material bundle (legojos) by the bundle. The collection of Papeles procedentes de la Isla de Cuba, comprising 2375 legajos containing over a million documents, is the most valuable collection pertaining to Galvez's capture of Penscola in the Archivo de Indias. The name of the collection is derived from the fact that in the beginning, before it was removed to Seville, it formed a part of the Archivo General de Cuba at Havana. It is a unique, enjoyable, and, at times, frustrating experience to carry on research in the archives of Spain. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Revolutionary War, United States History, U. S. Octavo, khaki cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, xi, 158 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Few people, if asked to name the important battles of the American Revolution, would include the Battle of Pensacola. Few, indeed, are even acquainted with the battle; but the struggle between Spain and England for supremacy along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico was one of the most strategic battles of the American Revolution. With the ending of the Seven Years War in 1763, there were no longer three great colonial empires in the New World; there were only two -- the British and the Spanish. Spain, the weaker of the two, realized that if she were to hold her own against Great Britain it would be necessary for her to force the British completely out of the Gulf area. There were different opinions among the English about the importance of Pensacola. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Revolutionary War, United States History, U. S.
