Writing to the editor at American Artist Magazine, the Russian-born American painter Helen Gerardia inquires "would it be possible to list as Art buys for Xmas the SAGA Associate Membership Prints of Altman, Blaustein and Moy. and Eichenberg, Frasconi, Leighton. Brochure on reguest". Signed in full "Helen Gerardia". There are staple holes near the top right corners. The letter is folded for mailing with minor creasing to the left edge. Near fine. Born in Ekaterinoslav, Russia, the American painter Helen Gerardia (1903-1988) studied under Hans Hoffman and participated in the Abstract expressionist movement, subsequently leaning more towards Cubism. Gerardia was also engaged in lithography and etching, founding the Gerardia Workshop. A member of the Vectors artist group, she was president of the American Society of Contemporary Artists from 1967 to 1969.

Refregier writes to progressive educator Harold Rugg about a proposed visit to Columbia University to talk about his work: "I am planning to bring along color slides of my easle [sic] paintings and murals and a 16 mm film of the San Francisco murals. Naturally, I would like to share my experiences, such as the work in architecture, and, perhaps, there could be some possibility of arranging an informal evening at the University or some other place." He also writes about his interest in Puerto Rican art and his plan to visit Puerto Rico.Anton Refregier [1905-1979] was a painter and muralist active in Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project commissions and in teaching art. He was a Russian immigrant to the United States. One of his best known works is his mural "The History of California", painted from 1940-1948 and located in the Rincon Center in downtown San Francisco, California. It depicts the history of the state across twenty-seven panels.One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg (1886-1960) was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s.

As critic Andre de Ridder prepared the July 1933 Kandinsky issue of his periodical Selection', the artist remained in Berlin to wrap up business as the Bauhaus closed. Facing constant accusations of teaching un-German, degenerate art' and fostering Communism, the school could no longer function under the pressure of the Nazi Party. Kandinsky reviewed de Ridder's pieces from afar and passed them along to his friend and future biographer Will Grohmann. Two decades after their creation, his Compositions continued to spark discussion; his abstract style of painting based on the nonrepresentational properties of color and form, intended to create the same emotional impact that music did, challenged the art world both theoretically and aesthetically. The artist requests that de Ridder send a copy to publisher Christian Zervos, and suggests contacting prominent gallery owners Erhard Weyhe and John Becker, along with Galka Scheyer, the American representative for Die Blaue Vier (a group of Bauhaus artists Kandinsky, Klee, Jawlensky, and Feininger who exhibited and lectured together) to secure orders. But mostly they are happy because they can again write about the arts in their ancient, superficial tone [.] The attitude that abstract art has value merely as arts and crafts and can produce only pure ornamentation has become the received point of view. The latter, for example, was claimed by Carl Einstein in the 'Propylaea Art History' where he discussed my work [.]" (15 May 1926; transl.).
