Not a book but a pair of 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm monaural vinyl record albums by the teen idols of 1959, each young crooner sporting a truly impressive pompadour. "Hold That Tiger," Chancellor CHL-5003, is a very-good vinyl disc in a very-good full-color cardboard ja…cket with considerable rub to verso; the vinyl of Mr. Rydell's "we got love" -- Cameo LP 1006 -- is a bit better than "very good," in a "good" full-color cardboard jacket with considerable edge rub. We have never quite grasped what genre of music discoverer / manager / promoter Bob Marcucci intended the handsome young Fabian Forte to be offering -- this disc includes Harry Da Costa's "Tiger Rag," (surely better suited to 1920s college boys in the rumble seat in raccoon coats) Ed Marshall's "Ooh, What You Do," and Pomus & Shuman's "Turn Me Loose," which was specifically written for Fabian and became his first hit, soaring all the way to Number 9 on the charts, apparently intended as an echo-chamber simulacrum of Elvis, though it's not exactly "Stairway to Heaven," and it's not a terribly high-energy effort, at that. Bobby Rydell's offerings here, most credited to Kal Mann-Bernie Lowe, aren't much more memorable, though he does at least cut loose on Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame" and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say." It was a strange time: Elvis had gone into the Army for a two-year hitch in 1958; Buddy Holly and Richie Valens had died on Feb.3; the Beatles were still four years away. So Frankie Avalon (Marcucci's other discovery) covered "Young Love," "Diana" "At the Hop" , "I'm Walkin'," and "Little Bitty Pretty One," and everybody waited for something new to happen -- presumably something called "The Sixties." Two vinyl LPs from 1959, for one price, now reduced from $15.
