Hardcover. Condition: Fair. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, two volumes bound in a single edition. Original binding of brown blindstamped cloth with gilt to spine. Exterior shows heavy wear and chipping, mainly to edges and corners. Spine is cracked at both hinges chipping and cracks in several areas as well. Despite the rough exterior the interior binding is good with only minor openings starting at the front board. Original pale yellow end pages in front and rear with the front showing pencil names and notes on both the end page and pastedown. No handwriting found on text pages though there were about two dozen pages and had the upper corner folded. These are straightened out some may still remain. Pages are tone due to age and foxing and spotting is present. This book contains both volumes bound in one edition. The first volume having 306 pages in the second volume containing 388 pages (694 pages total, not including publishers advertisements). Please note: exterior is fragile so book was placed in a clear archival storage bag.

Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pencil markings to front pastedown. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Heavy splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Visible wear marks to boards.

Bound in full polished calf, with raised spine bands, decorated compartments, dual spine labels in red and black, yellow tinted edges, frontis portrait in volume I, (vii, 468 + 590, 2 p. errata). Armorial bookplates of Henry Collins in each volume. As noted, both front covers detached, otherwise the volumes have only light shelfwear, rear joint of volume I starting to separate a bit, a light scratch to the lower spine label of volume II, but internally fresh and clean, with light foxing to frontis only. Foster was a noted theologian of his time whose primary dissent with church doctrine involved "Duration of Future Punishment", which is treated at length in some of the letters included in the work. .
