A large, full scale, leather bound hardback book, with gorgeous gilt titles on the front board and spine. Quarter-bound in a shiny gloss black, separated by a beautiful, decorative gilt line, with mottled, matt black sides. This wonderful book is really good condition and as its a used book, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. Corners worn and bumped, base of spine a tad and worn. Please see photos, but considering this book is probably over 120 years old, its still in remarkably nice order. 96 pages all intact, nice tight bindings. No published date, probably around the early part of the 1900's by The Illustrated London News and Sketch, Limited, with fourteen India Proof and Other Photogravures from pictures by major artists of that time. Tissue guards in place with all plates, some with the odd tear or two but overall in good order. Comprising essentially of 3 parts, the manuscript was edited by Herbert Walter Fairman (1907-1982), and copied in 1952 by Constant de Wit (1907-1989). In her memorial volume to Cerny (Rome, BIP, 1975) Sarah Israelit Groll says that the first section, paragraphs 1-145 (Prepositions, nouns and verbs), was first copied by Caminos in 1950 for Gardiner and is now in the Griffith Institute. As far as we are aware, no comparison has ever been made between the two versions. The present manuscript is a direct carbon copy of the typed manuscript. The hieroglyphic text is handwritten in pencil directly on the paper, apparently by De Wit. The second section which is typed here as integral continuation of the first, has entries on Negation, Prothetic aleph in L. E., Periphrasis with "iri", Relative Clauses, Relatives (Participles), Non-Verbal Sentences, Participles. It is assumed that this section was not included in Caminos' copy of 1950 and appears here for the first time. The last section, titled "Additional Series of Notes", Pp. xxxix, is reproduced on photocopier.
