Condition: Good. Document. Bearer bond, made out to Nathan P. Howell in print; with an engraved illustrated architectural vignette at the top of the sheet. Noted in manuscript as bond # 350; signed by Sealy and with the blind-stamped company seal with the issue date of 1849. Below the center-fold line are (7) 'Warrants for Seven Dollars, being one years interest.' on the bond, individually signed by S.A. Sealy and dated 1852 through 1858, one payment of interest per year; all remain attached to the sheet. Printed on light blue paper stock, with certification on the reverse that the bond ".is included in a Mortgage on the Lands, Buildings, Fixtures, Machinery and Apparatus of the Montauk Manufacturing Company, executed and delivered to Grosvenor S. Adams, Philander R. Jennings and Nathaniel Topping." Printed at the Gazette Office Sag Harbor, L.I. A very similar building, notable for the distinctive front entrance 'towers' and labeled Montauk Mills is pictured on the 1854 Wall & Forrest Map of Sag Harbor. Our speculation is that the original Montauk Mfg. building may have been destroyed or modified unrecognizably; this is approximately the location of the Watchcase Factory of former Fahys-Bulova ownership. The old brick Bulova complex has recently been restored and repurposed as an upscale condominium project. (With our appreciation for this information to Megan Bardis and Andrea Meyer of the East Hampton Library Long Island Collection) Approx. 13 1/2" x 17" size; some splitting along old fold lines, usefully repaired at some point in the past; a little edge-wear & darkening at margins; in good condition.
