Doch was Diabetesbetroffenen das Leben rettete, führte in der Psychiatrie in eine Sackgasse.…Ein Rückblick auf die Insulinschocktherapie zeigt, wie nahe Hoffnung und Irrtum in der Medizin beieinanderliegen" (sehr ausführlich:T. Karrer, in: BrainMag 5 2025, S. 30-31). - Im Vorwort schreibt der Leiter der psychiatrischen Uniklinik Wien Otto Pötzl, dass die Resultate zwei- bis dreimal besser seien als die optimistischsten Statistiken über unbehandelte Verläufe der Schizophrenie. - "S. behauptete, daß durch die Insulinbehandlung in 88% der Fälle Heilerfolge erzielt worden seien. Trotz warnender Stimmen (Übertreibung d. Erfolge, Nebenwirkungen, Todesfälle) breitete sich die Methode in Europa relativ rasch aus, nachdem u. a. Max Müller in Münsingen 1936 über positive Resultate berichtet hatte. 1936 emigrierte S. in die USA, wo er bis zu seinem Tod eine florierende|psychiatrische Privatpraxis betrieb. In den USA fand die Insulinschocktherapie ebenfalls rasch Anhänger, u. a. durch Kurse, die er selbst leitete, und durch seine 1938 in engl. Sprache erschienene Monographie 'The Pharmacological Shock Treatment of Schizophrenial'." (U. Benzenhöfer in DNB 22). - "Die Insulin-Koma-Therapie war für einige Jahre (etwa von 1935 bis 1955) in der Psychiatrie eine anerkannte und verbreitete Behandlungsform gegen Schizophrenie und Depression, galt zeitweise sogar als Standardtherapie, bis ihre Wirkungslosigkeit schließlich bekannt wurde.
