Ständiger Wandel der Technologie und sogar der Märkte erfordern eine ständige Anpassung der Unternehmensstrategie und Produktion. Das Ziel der Unternehmen muss es sein, kostengering, qualitätsstark, innovativ und vor allem flexibel zu produzieren. Nur eine Kombination aus den Zielfaktoren höhere Qualität, schnellere Marktreife und geringere Kosten kann im Zusammenhang mit immer kürzeren Produktlebenszyklen zu einer Verbesserung der Wettbewerbssituation führen. Diese Kombination kann in der heutigen Zeit mit herkömmlichen Organisationsformen der tayloristischen Massenfertigung nicht mehr erreicht werden. Lean Production ist ein modernes Management- und Produktionskonzept, welches auch oft als 'zweite industrielle Revolution' tituliert wird und eine kundengerechte und flexible Alternative zum Taylorismus darstellt. Zur Verbesserung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit mit den Zielen der Zeit- und Kostenminimierung sowie der Qualitäts- und Innovationsführerschaft ist die Abkehr von der Massenfertigung zu einer Lean Production unausweichlich geworden. Anfängliche Misserfolge waren zwar oftmals die Konsequenz falscher beziehungsweise lückenhafter Implementierung dieses Produktionskonzeptes, doch es sind auch positive Implementierungsbeispiele existent, die im Verlauf dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt werden sollen. Zunächst soll ein gewisses Basiswissen über Lean Production vermittelt werden. Im Anschluss werden Merkmale und Komponenten vorgestellt. Zum Schluss wird dieses moderne Produktionskonzept kritisch betrachtet und analysiert.
