Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1 leaf. Near Fine. Letterhead: The Salk Institute/ 28 September 1983/ Dear Doctor Kaiser:/ Thank you for your very nice letter. I, too, am glad to have lived/ the better part of my life in our generation. I have often thought/ that the work reported in the enclosed would have taken much longer/ had it been initiated 20-30-40 years later!/ The enclosed is a copy of the report that was presented in Ann Arbor;/ I thought you might like to have it as well as the reprint of the/ paper published in the American Journal of Public Health./ Sincerely,/ [signed Jonas Salk]/ Jonas Salk/ Dr. Alfred J. Kaiser/ 22 School Street/ Hatfield, Mass. 01038. The report to which Jonas Salk refers in this letter is "Vaccination against Paralytic Poliomyelitis Performance and Prospects." That report was issued in two formats: a spiral-bound version, with flexible cardboard wrappers, that was privately distributed, and a paper published in May 1955 in the American Journal of Public Health. On April 12, 1955, at the University of Michigan, Thomas Francis, Jr., announced the results of a large, national, year-long field trial of the effectiveness of Jonas Salk's anti-polio vaccine. On the same day, Salk presented his own report on the vaccine. Salk had conducted his own small-scale field trials in 1952, and in 1953 had published his first report on the effectiveness of the vaccine (Garrison-Morton 4672.2). For a full account of the Salk vaccine and the field trials, see John Paul, A History of Poliomyelitis, chapters 39-40. Signed by Author(s).

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 leaves, 16 numbered leaves, 21 unnumbered leaves (printed on rectos only). Original printed wrappers, spiral-bound inside the wrappers. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY JONAS SALK (on the title page, dated 1979). On April 12, 1955, at the University of Michigan, Thomas Francis, Jr., announced the results of a large, national, year-long field trial of the effectiveness of Jonas Salk's anti-polio vaccine. On the same day, Salk presented his own report on the vaccine, offered here. Salk had conducted his own small-scale field trials in 1952, and in 1953 had published his first report on the effectiveness of the vaccine (Garrison-Morton 4672.2). "Francis announced the results of the national trial on 12 April 1955 at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in front of television and movie cameras, 150 reporters, and hundreds of doctors and scientists. The vaccine, he said, was effective, powerful, and safe. A wave of joy swept the nation. Shoppers in stores listened to the Francis speech over radio loudspeakers; church bells were rung. On 23 April, President Dwight Eisenhower gave Salk a citation 'for his extraordinary achievement' in the White House Rose Garden" (article on Jonas Salk in ANB = American National Biography). For a full, scholarly account of the Salk vaccine and the field trials, see John R. Paul, A History of Poliomyelitis, chapters 39-40. Signed by Author(s).

American virologist and discoverer of the first polio vaccine, an inactivated form delivered by injection. Typed Letter Signed, 1 page, 8.5" x 11", November 13, 1990. On letterhead of The Salk Institute. Salk writes to Mr. John Stanger, a young man who had previously written to him. In the letter, Salk espouses the virtue of finding purpose in life and going after it, writing: "When I was in my teens I learned that it was important to find a purpose in life and to pursue it. In the course of my pursuit I learned of the wisdom taught by that lesson." He signs his name "Jonas Salk." As a young man, Salk was driven and focused on achievement, entering the highly competitive City College of New York at the early age of fifteen. Once he discovered his own interest in medical research, he pursued it with single-minded purpose on changing the lives of human beings around the world.
