With Graswinkelius' Commentary on the Conspiracy of Catiline, Ruperti's Observations, and a tract from Ausonius Popma which contains a short biography of Sallust and other Roman historians. Contains Sallust's surviving fragments from his Histories of Rome, and Sallust's work on the Conspiracy of Catiline and his work on the Jugurthine War, both of which survive complete. Sallust is the earliest Roman historian from whom we have suriving writings. He would often include passages on morality and passages praising a government that included the voice of the people in his histories. Sallust's work would later influence both medieval monarchs and several figures in the American revolution. This is a large and attractively done edition. Near Very Good. Three of the four joints gently exposed but holding, the crown of volume one's spine rubbed away. Volume one's rear board somewhat bowed. The leaves are clean and bright.

Johann Rudolph Chotek von Chotkow (1749-1824) was minister of finance in Austria and Government President (Gubernialpräsident) in the Kingdom of Bohemia.
