Almost certainly an early C19 Delphini edition, dated 1827 on flyleaf, some worm at foot of page in first few leaves, text clean, prelims + 234 pp + lengthy index, detailed annotation. Contains, in prelims a GJ Vossius essay, then Catalina, Jugurtha, Fragmenta, attributed works [234 pp.] & very full unpaginated indices Antiquarian leather skilfully restored & probably we think the London edition of 1825 [BLC 9040.e.18] Size: 8vo. Antiquarian.

Title pages done in red and black, each with the publisher's device engraved. Volumes one and two illustrated with woodcut initials, volume two with woodcut tailpieces and in-text woodcuts. With Graswinkelius' Commentary on the Conspiracy of Catiline, Ruperti's Observations, and a tract from Ausonius Popma which contains a short biography of Sallust and other Roman historians. Contains Sallust's surviving fragments from his Histories of Rome, and Sallust's work on the Conspiracy of Catiline and his work on the Jugurthine War, both of which survive complete. Sallust is the earliest Roman historian from whom we have suriving writings. He would often include passages on morality and passages praising a government that included the voice of the people in his histories. Sallust's work would later influence both medieval monarchs and several figures in the American revolution. This is a large and attractively done edition. Near Very Good. Three of the four joints gently exposed but holding, the crown of volume one's spine rubbed away. Volume one's rear board somewhat bowed. The leaves are clean and bright.

Gilt monogram of Johann Graf Chotek ?JGC? with crown on lower compartment and with his gilt Coat of Arms on top. Johann Rudolph Chotek von Chotkow (1749-1824) was minister of finance in Austria and Government President (Gubernialpräsident) in the Kingdom of Bohemia.
