Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Really fresh looking copy with lovely clean red cloth boards. Inscription of famous anthropologist, AWF Fuller in light pencil on the ffep with further note of Fuller's laid in. The inscriptions and notes read "AWF Fuller 18 March, 1952 (price) 30/-" then underneath "A most valuable & interesting record Tanners, Waldron, Pl 172 Samuel Fuller" again this is in light pencil as Fuller was in the habit of doing in his book collection (see other listings.) The laid in note reads: " Apuldram (underlined as a heading) I think the Editors are wrong here. This is still called Tower House although now much enlarged. Rymans is another large house quite close to it." The note is written on the back of a piece of envelope which has the London address of Captain Fuller on the reverse with a post mark dated April 1953. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Also laid in is a piece of paper with a further note about the referenced plate 172 of "Waldron" "Fullers Home at Waldron the (Iron Masters) S.F. over door stands for Samuel Fuller" clearly this was a book which is relevant to the Fuller family history. A smaller note next to the caption for this plate redas "(Fullers House S.F. over door." Terrific copy and with great provenance.

FARRELL'S 1935 BOOK " A NOTE ON LITERARY CRITICISM" THAT RAISED A SIGNIFICANT CONTROVERSY AMONG AUTHORS AT THE TIME. THE TITLE OF THAT SECTION IS " JAMES T. FARRELL AND THE LITERARY LEFT." THE CON OPINION IS TITLED "SECTARIANISM ON THE RIGHT" BY ISADOR SCHNEIDER. THE PRO OPINION IS PROVIDED BY GRANVILLE HICKS AND IS TITLED "IN DEFENSE OF JAMES FARRELL." AND OF COURSE, "REBUTTAL" IS OFFERED BY JAMES T. FARRELL. OTHER AUTHORS WAGED A PRO AND CON LITERARY WAR APPROVING AND/OR CONTESTING FARRELL'S POINT OF VIEW ON LITERARY CRITICISM. THEY EXCHANGED THEIR ERUDITE OPINIONS IN SUBSEQUENT PUBLICATIONS THAT CAUSED A FARRELL REBUTTAL TO SCHNEIDER'S CRITICISM. First Edition Signed
Hardcover. 8vo. Light green cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 448pp. Illustrations. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear only. A tight, quite attractive first edition of this broad anthology that (to cite front jacket flap) "offers a wide range of stories, songs, poems, and plays, as well as examples of photographs, cartoons, and paintings of the period." This copy with choice and relevant autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from a writer represented in this gathering -- Archibald MacLeish, whose poem "Invocation to the Social Muse" appears on page 239-40. 1p (lettersheet), 4 3/4" X 7 3/4", Conway, MA, 18 May n.y. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Single light horizontal fold. On letterhead of Boston's Ritz-Carlton, MacLeish writes this old friend in black ballpoint sending "Thanks for taking the time and trouble to write me. I appreciate very much your good wishes: may I send my own back to you," boldly signed in full. Undated, but likely contemporaneous with this book's publication. MacLeish (1892-1982) was a versatile poet, playwright, writer and man of letters awarded Pulitzer Prizes in 1933, 1952 and 1958; he also won a National Book Award and numerous other honors and was appointed Librarian of Congress in 1939 despite lack of a library science degree; in his spare time he was an attorney and Harvard writing professor!
