Soft cover. Condition: New. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Gandhigram. 3. The Gandhigram Trust. 4. Social welfare. 5. Education. 6. Rural economics. 7. Lessons from Praxis. 8. Challenges in the future. Select bibliography. Index. In a critical departure from books that concentrate on Gandhi the person Gandhian thought and Gandhism Notes from Gandhigram focuses instead on the institutions and individuals that have adopted the Gandhian approach as a means of social transformation. It looks beyond the conceptual and symbolic into the concrete to determine whether Gandhi is passé redundant or insightful. The relevance of Gandhian thought is examined through a critical analysis of the experience of the Gandhigram Trust a sixty year old organization based in the Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu. Retaining objectivity but without being judgmental the study validates the enduring relevance of Gandhi in converting a vision into a social engagement creating a vibrant community with a culture of concern humility and care. While Gandhigram has been buffeted by the conflicting relationships between individuals and the institutions the people and the volunteer economics and politics tradition and modernity self interest and social interest the Trust has endured. In today's world where the legacy of Gandhi has been reduced to lip service this book places Gandhi squarely into the ongoing debates on globalisation freedom and the relationship between the individual and society. It thus makes a valuable addition to the literature on Gandhi. 252 pp.…

Hardback. Condition: New. In the first decade of the twenty-first century autonomy has become one of the major concerns of our social and political existence. The right to autonomous life is now a political, cultural and social call of both the individual and the group - a rare conformity that points to the crucial importance of autonomy in the agenda of critical thinking. Though the notion of autonomy in the modern era was at first applied in a political context, the term was quickly taken up in the context of individual rational persons, their rights and existences. In the wake of anticolonial movements, the term gained new perspectives and meanings which would imply new rights and new responsibilities. It became the emblem of group rights, in particular minority rights. In time the idea of autonomy became not only the standard of rights and responsibilities, but also an issue of governmentality. The present volume is a critical attempt to understand autonomy from both historical and analytical perspectives. An international group of scholars seeks answers that go beyond the thinking of Immanuel Kant or a simple hermeneutic reading of the principle of autonomy. Autonomy, in this collective reading, emerges as deeply rooted in social practices and contentious politics.…

Paperback. Condition: New. This book traces the journey of Mahatma Gandhi, from being a simple and truth-seeking human being, a satyarthi, to a committed, conscious and social human being, a satyagrahi. It specifically looks at this critical transformation during the time Gandhi was in South Africa. The central argument of the book is that Gandhi evolved from being a satyarthi to a satyagrahi in South Africa. Subsequently in India, he consolidated his orientation with an emphasis on praxis, by developing his ideas as instruments for social and individual struggles. Marked by a series of events, this period was an intense quest of self-realization and understanding, and shows his journey from being Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to being Mahatma Gandhi. The book discusses various elements of Gandhian thought and praxis - morality, wisdom, non-violence, truth, social justice, dharma, trusteeship, education, sarvodaya, Hind Swaraj, swadeshi, and social service - and interprets the relevance of Gandhi's thought in the modern world by highlighting its unique significance for social transformation and change.Lucid and accessible, the book will be useful to scholars and researchers of Gandhi studies, Indian political thought, modern Indian history, and political studies. …
