Leather. Condition: Good Only. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce first edition of De Vita & Rebus Gestis Serenissmiae Principis Mariae Scotorum Reginae. Two Volumes, complete. This work is the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, in Latin. The binding could do with strengthening but still good to see it is the original and this is a rare work, last seen t uction in 2001 and before that only in 1985 in the last thrity years. Samuel Jebb, d. 1772, was a physician and scholar. "He was educated at Mansfield grammar school, and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was intended for the church, but being a nonjuror he was unable to take orders. He remained at Cambridge at least until 1718, when he became librarian to Jeremy Collier in London and began to occupy himself with literary work. Possibly the death of Collier in 1726 had something to do with Jebb's change of profession, for he commenced the study of medicine, attending Mead's private practice, and also learning chemistry and pharmacy. Jebb took the degree of MD in 1728 and set up as a physician where he combined medical practice with his literary work. He did not become a licentiate of the College of Physicians until 1751." (from the DNB) Bound in a contemporary full leather binding with gilt lettering and blindstamped decoration. The boards are held by the cords only, and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packaging. The front endpapers of volume 2 are detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant bumping and rubbing, with some loss. Three of the four spine labels are missing. Internally the pages generally clean and bright, with slight browning to the page edges, and the very occasional spot. There are occasional slightly browned watermarks that do not affect the visibility of the text. Good Only. book.
