Aufbauend auf den Konzepten von Biosozialität, Biological Citizenship, Spendenwirtschaft und Transnationalisierung entwickelt die Autorin die Idee eines "Biokosmopolitismus": Distinktionsformen, die auf biomedizinischem Wissen beruhen, verschränken sich mit kà rpergebundenen Praktiken. In dieser Symbiose verschmilzt private, auf den engsten Familienkreis bezogene Vor- und Fürsorge mit Altruismus, der unbekannte und anonyme Patienten einschliesst, und mit der abstrakten "Spende" potenziellen wissenschaftlichen Wissens. Hier, so argumentiert die Autorin, wird ein Sinn für globale biologische Zusammengehà rigkeit in konkrete Alltagspraktiken integriert. Die Studie beruht auf umfangreichen Feldforschungen in Grossbritannien und Deutschland, welche die Autorin in à ffentlichen und privaten Nabelschnurblutbanken sowie Krankenhäusern und Geburtsstationen durchgeführt hat. Sie verbindet sozialwissenschaftliche Theorie mit der dichten Beschreibung des Alltags von werdenden Eltern, Hebammen, Frauenärzten, Labormitarbeitern und Stammzellforschern.
