So lautet die zentrale Frage der Forschungsdiskussion über die sowjetische Innenpolitik der 20er Jahre. Dieser Frage geht die Verfasserin in ihrer Untersuchung der Geschichte des Verbandes der Gottlosen nach. Dabei beschränkt sie sich weitgehend auf die zweite Hälfte der 20er Jahre, also die Periode der Neuen Ãkonomischen Politik und der beginnenden Industrialisierungs- und Kollektivierungskampagne. Warum befürwortete ein Verband, der sich noch Mitte der 20er Jahre für eine evolutionäre Gesellschaftstransformation auf dem Wege der Aufklärung eingesetzt hatte, die 1929/30 einsetzende Politik der MassenschlieÃungen von Kirchen und der Deportation von Geistlichen? Vor dem Hintergrund der die Forschungsdiskussion dominierenden Interpretationsmodelle, die den politischen Umbruch am Ende der 20er Jahre entweder als totalitäre "Revolution von oben" oder aus sozialhistorischer Perspektive als Initiative "von unten" begreifen, präsentiert die Verfasserin eine andere Sichtweise: Sie versteht die Geschichte des Verbandes der Gottlosen als eine ständige Konfrontation der politischen Konzepte innerhalb der Führungsgruppe des Verbandes mit den äuÃeren politischen und gesellschaftlichen Realitäten. Als strukturelles Merkmal für die Radikalisierung der Gottlosen nimmt sie also einen fortwährenden Konflikt zwischen "innen" und "auÃen" an. Sie registriert drei wesentliche Bestimmungsfaktoren, die die Führungsspitze der Gottlosen die Radikalisierung der Innenpolitik haben mittragen lassen: 1. ihre totalisierenden Konzepte von der Organisation des eigenen Verbandes; 2. die Misserfolge bei ihrer Durchführung; und 3. die strukturelle Einbindung des Verbandes in das sowjetische Staatswesen. Mangelnde Erfolge bei der antireligià sen Arbeit und die Abhängigkeit des Verbandes von schon bestehenden Strukturen im sowjetischen Staat haben immer wieder zu Legitimationsverlust geführt. Die Autorin legt in ihrer Untersuchung überzeugend dar, dass der Kampf um den Erhalt des Verbandes gegen Ende der 20er Jahre zur wichtigsten Motivation der Politik der Gottlosen wurde. In diesem Kampf um Selbsterhalt sieht sie die zunehmende Radikalisierung der Gottlosen begründet. Zum Ende der 20er Jahre stellte sich der Verband dann vollständig in den Dienst des "sozialistischen Aufbaus", ohne eine eigenständige atheistische Position hierzu zu entwickeln.

Er war Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft ehemaliger politischer Häftlinge, Vorsitzender der Gesellschaft alter Bolschewiki, Mitglied des Zentralkomitees der KPdSU.
