She wrote many popular dramatic and soap-opera scripts, especiallyfor the ABC radio network, including ''My True Story,'' ''Light of the World,'' and ''Whispering Streets''. Sangster, Jr. began writing as a teen-ager, contributing poetry to the magazine Christian Herald, and she was a war correspondent for the magazine during World War I. After leaving the Christian Herald, she became managing editor of Photoplay magazine and also contributed to Cosmopolitan, Redbook and McCalls. Sangster was the granddaughter of Margaret E. Sangster (1838-1912), also an American poet, author, and editor, whose works frequently focused on Christian themes. This volume of prose and poetry by Sangster, Jr. was issued in 1914, when she was in her early 20s, and just 2 years after her grandmother's death. According to the preface, some of the material was previously published in the Christian Herald and the New York Times. 8vo. Olive green cloth boards with black title to spine and front board. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. States "First published 1967 by Triton Books." Acquired from the estate of film director Roy Ward Baker ("A Night to Remember," 1958; "Quatermass and the Pit," 1967; "Vampire Lovers," 1970; "Scars of Dracula," 1970, as well as TV episodes of "The Saint," "The Avengers," etc.) in November, 2010, via Richard Thornton Books, Winchmore Hill, London. Inscribed to Baker (though the recipient is not named): "We didn't make it exactly the way we wanted to -- but by Christ, we made it," and signed "Jimmy." James Henry Kinmel Sangster, screenwriter, producer, director and novelist, was born 1927 and died 2011. He was a key figure in the revival of Hammer Films in the late 1950s and through the 1960s, writing "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957), "Dracula" (1958), "The Mummy" (1959) and two dozen other Hammer horror films before moving to America, where he wrote for "The Six Million Dollar Man," "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," "Ironside," "Wonder Woman," etc. Sangster wrote eight novels, and a couple of novelizations of his own screenplays, besides his film and television work. Three books were murder mysteries published from 1986-88 featuring former Scotland Yard investigator James Reed. Two spy thrillers published 1968-70 starring British Intelligence agent Katy Touchfeather, whose cover job was . . . airline stewardess. Last but not least he wrote two half-spy/half-mystery novels, one published in 1967, the other in 1968, starring ex-British Intelligence operative turned private investigator John Smith, the first being "private i". (The second and final John Smith spy thriller was "Foreign Exchange.") "private i" was adapted as an American TV movie titled "The Spy Killer" in 1969. "The Spy Killer," which starred Robert Horton, Sebastian Cabot, and the delectable Jill St. John, was directed, of course, by . . . Roy Ward Baker. His signed copy, 183 pp. Reduced from $600. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. The portfolio, measuring 10 in. x 16, is titled in pencil on the ffep: "Wind Mill Point." Then follows the signature, "A. W. Sangster, Buffalo N. Y." and the date 1879. One drawing is entitled "Buffalo River" and a few others have the notation "W. C. Oct" or "W. C. July," presumably in Sangster's hand. The studies are of trees, rivers, lake, rocks, windmills and farm houses. Although unsigned, these sketches are unmistakably Sangster's. There is evidence that approximately 28 leaves have been detached from the portfolio. Quarter-bound in leather over decorated boards. The leather spine is missing and the cover joints are weak, but the drawings are in fine condition. Amos W. Sangster (1833-1904) was a Canadian-American artist, painter, engraver, and inventor. He is primarily remembered for his collection of one hundred fifty-three original depicting scenes along the Niagara River, later published under the general title of "Niagara River and Falls from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario." Most of Sangster's art is scenes either along the Niagara River or the Lake Erie shoreline, close to the mouth of the river. His original art constitutes a valuable artistic and historic record of the landscape as it was over one hundred thirty years ago. Signed by Illustrator(s).
