Hardcover. Condition: New. Contents: Introduction. 1. Modernity and the Crisis of Democratization in South Asia. 2. Political Decay and the Legitimation Crisis in South Asia. 3. Nuclear Nationalisms and Quest for Ontological Security. 4. Sub-conventional War and the Problematique of Liberal Peace. Conclusion. Afterword. Index. The IndiaPakistan Sub-conventional War: Democracy and Peace in South Asia argues that it is possible to map the functioning of democracy in South Asia by studying the role of the army in the political processes of Pakistan. In December 1988, Pakistan experienced a transition to democracy. Simultaneously, the militaryintelligence complex was also able to take advantage of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and intensify the proxy war against India. Considering such a contradictory political situation, this book studies the deepening conflictual trajectory of the IndiaPakistan relations since 1989. By analyzing this period of history, it argues that, in South Asia, the process of democratic transition and intensification of the sub-conventional war have happened concurrently. The book further argues that overt nuclear weaponization and the failure of nuclear deterrence allowed the sustenance of the IndiaPakistan sub-conventional war. By examining the subcontinental security predicament involving the two nuclear-powered adversaries, the book interrogates the democratic peace thesis. It deconstructs the thesis' arguments in the geo-strategic context of the South Asian regional security architecture. …

Hardbound. Condition: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Domestic politics and international relations. 3. Partition of the Indian sub continent. 4. The unending conflict. 5. Pakistan factor in India's foreign policy perceptions of political parties. 6. The Kashmir issue. 7. Approach of political parties to the Kashmir issue. 8. Nuclearisation of India and Pakistan. 9. Attitude of political parties to the nuclear question. 10. An evaluation. Select bibliography. Index. This work examines India Pakistan relations from the perspective of major Indian political parties. It has been done by taking into cognizance the fact that foreign policy issues concerning nation states have increasingly acquired significance in their domestic spheres due to the time space compression effected by globalization. The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive explanation as to how political parties perceive major issues in India Pakistan relations and examine how they contribute in the policy making process in the realm of India's external affairs. The work is predicated upon the theoretical framework relating to the interface between domestic politics and international relations of a polity. This study is a marked departure from the prevailing trend of analysing India Pakistan relations from merely the perspective of its international dimension. By analysing the contentious issues in their relations from the prism of the approach of political parties it accents the utility of understanding foreign policy issues from the perspective of domestic determinants. In this way it attempts to provide a broad based examination of the major internal problems confronted by India's policy makers while devising crucial policies to deal with India Pakistan relations. It is also examined as to how their exists a consensus among political parties appertaining the nature of India's relations with Pakistan and the crucial effect of the issues in their bilateral relations upon its wider international affairs. Anyhow this consensus has been distorted plagued by divergent perceptions among political parties regarding the causes of India Pakistan tensions and identification of policy options to effectively deal with the situation. 220 pp.…

Paperback. Condition: New. This book examines the complex dynamics of India-Pakistan relations, by situating the same in the postcolonial setting of the subcontinent. In pursuit of this, the book analyses the impact of the linkages between the postcolonial processes of state-making and the structuring of political communities, upon the evolution of the problématique of state security in South Asia. For the purpose of undertaking this task, the author deconstructs the countries' colonial history, with an aim to mapp its impact on the making of the foreign policy of Pakistan. Drawing primarily from colonial discourse theory and historical sociology, the book links the trajectory of Pakistan's international politics, to its domestic politics and "weak state" inheritances. By doing this, it offers a stimulating treatment of the history of the country's troubled postcolonial relations with India. This has been done in the book, by presenting the modes by which the religio-military and politico-bureaucratic classes that constitute the power elite in Pakistan, tended to have moulded an India-centred State security problématique. This book will be of interest to researchers studying South Asian security, India-Pakistan relations and the defence and foreign policy of Pakistan.…
