There has been tremendous increase in the general awareness of the importance of ecological interactions, environmental pollution, global warming, acid rains, wildlife management, conservation of natural resources, and the loss of global biodiversity owing to habitat destruction. In parallel there has been rapid widening of the scope of ecology and environmental biology. This great expansion in the understanding of these fields of biological sciences has led to a problem for the students of these subjects. Leading textbooks have grown greatly in size and complexity. Ecology courses are now an integral component of a wide range of biological science degrees. Admission to many of these courses is dependent on certain entrance examinations.
