Eminent latiniste, Jean de Santeul (1630-1697) fut croqué par la Bruyère sous le personnage de Théodas. D'après Saint-Simon qui relate la chose dans ses Mémoires, il mourut victime d'une mauvaise plaisanterie du Duc de Bourbon qui avait mis du tabac dans son vin "pour voir ce qui arriverait". Etat très satisfaisant (restauration au second plat, coins frottés, coiffe sup. arasée) Langue: Latin.

First done in 1685, last in 1698. NEAR FINE text block, no aging, foxing, marginalia, etc. 12 pages of music at end immediately preceded by 2 pages of errata. Tight, book stays closed when stood on its spine. Tips & spine ends worn, Top cover outer hinge cracked, hinge still sound. Tight text block, no loose pages or sprung signatures. Santeul (Santolio)was a noted 17th C poet. Provenance: slip glued inside back cover translates to: "sold by Detrez, bookseller, successor to D. Colas, at #4 Place de la Sorbonne". Detrez was an early 19th C bookseller. VERY GOOD book. Contemporary full brown leather Gilt spine label.

Leather. Condition: Good. 306p; 12p. A small hardcover book bound in full brown leather with gilt foredges and marbled endpapers. Covers heavily scuffed, and spine ends worn down. Ex-seminary copy, with old labels on spine and inside front cover, plus a stamp on one endpaper and very old ink notations on the title page. One blank endpaper has been torn out, and there is a small tear in the title page. All pages lightly foxed. Main text remains unmarked, and binding is tight. Good, sturdy condition for its age! A Catholic hymnal from the late 17th century, containing words only (no music, except in the last 12 pages). All text in Latin. This copy belonged to Archbishop John B. Purcell of Cincinnati (1800-1883), whose signature is on the title page.

The most complete edition of hymns published shortly after the death of the author. Santeuil composed most of the hymns in 1685 for the breviary of the Church of Paris and that of Cluny - he was one of the last neo-latinist poets and befriended with i.a. Ménage, Rapin, Condé, the Duchess of Maine, Bossuet, Fénelon, Arnaud.Top of spine dam.; tailcap lacking; corners worn; with library ticket and stamp "Ex libris seminarii Brugensis".

The preliminary leaves with a nice frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by Pitau. Second edition of the complete works of Jean-Baptiste Santeul. He is known as the author of the theatre epitaph '' castigat ridendo mores '' or laughter corrects customs.
