Leggera gora al margine inferiore, piatti in cartone leggermente ondulati. Raccolta di dissertazioni e sermoni di carattere morale, filosofico e teologico, attribuiti a Carlo Borromeo e legati a un'accademia riunita nel Palazzo Vaticano nel XVI secolo. I testi, organizzati sotto forma di "notti" accademiche, documentano esercizi di disputa su temi religiosi e civili, secondo un metodo dialettico fondato sul confronto di tesi opposte. L'opera riflette pienamente il clima culturale della Controriforma, con particolare attenzione alla formazione spirituale, alla disciplina ecclesiastica e all'elaborazione di un pensiero cristiano capace di confrontarsi con la tradizione umanistica. L'edizione milanese del 1748, curata da Giuseppe Antonio Sassi sulla base di materiali manoscritti della Biblioteca Ambrosiana, rappresenta la prima sistemazione organica di questi testi e si distingue per l'impianto erudito e il valore documentario.

Edizione fondamentale dell'eruditissima opera del filologo Saxius (prefetto dell'Ambrosiana) sulla cultura a stampa del Quattrocento meneghino. Nello stesso anno fu inserita dall'Argelati nel primo volume della sua celebre Bibliotheca Scriptorum Mediolanensium (con diversa paginazione e composizione editoriale).
