Soft cover. Condition: New. Mentioned already in the ancient Tamil epic the Cilappatikaram, Srirangam is a sacred site of preeminent status in South Indian religious geography. This book, the fruit of long collaboration between the two authors, presents a critical edition of the Srirangamahatmya, a Sanskrit eulogy of this hallowed place, along with an English translation, the first translation into a European language. Its most important temple is dedicated to the self-manifest (svayamvyakta) form of Visnu as Ranganatha, lying upon his serpent bed on an island formed by the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers. But the text relates that this was not always its location. It describes the vimana, narrates how it came to be established on the island, and gives an account of the various sacred water-bodies in the vicinity, principal among which is the Candrapuskarini.

Hardback. Condition: New. Considering the enormous cultural plurality of India and uneven socio-economic development of its people, the Government of India listed certain communities as Scheduled Tribes (STs) for initiating development programmes and providing assured representation. Despite such provisions, in case of a few groups, the common programmes did not appear to make any headway. In fact, their population was either stagnant or declining suggesting high mortality rates. In order to ensure the develop-ment of these poorest of the poor among the ST communities, certain groups were identified initially in 1975. The criteria fixed for identification included declining or stagnant population, very low level of literacy and pre-agricultural level of technology. Thus 75 groups among the ST communities of India were identified in 17 States and 1 Union Territory, who initially were called Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs), and later renamed as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). During April to June 2012 the Anthropological Survey of India carried out a study of all the PVTGs. Its research teams visited various States, concerned tribal development agencies and non-government organizations. The survey was conducted with emphasis on gathering data on their socio-economic status and development.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Founded in 1997, the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law (UNYB), is produced under the auspices of the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law. Volume 28 of the UNYB features a special thematic forum titled 'Challenges and Opportunities for the Law of the Sea at a Time of Crisis'. This edition contains a curation of high-quality contributions that critically assess the resilience and adaptability of the law of the sea, four decades after the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The volume brings together insights from both academic and practitioner perspectives, offering a holistic analysis of contemporary maritime challenges, and the evolving role of the law of the sea in tackling them. Contributors include established and emerging scholars alongside practitioners from international courts and tribunals, United Nations bodies, national governments, and leading research institutions. Together, they reflect the diverse range of views shaping the law of the sea today. By concentrating on issues connected with the UN and its initiatives, the UNYB aims to facilitate an understanding of the changes the UN has been undergoing since its foundation. It also provides a forum in which the potential of international organizations to affect the future course of international law and relations can be examined and assessed. The UNYB addresses both scholars and practitioners, giving them insights into the workings, challenges and evolution of the UN.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Rites of expiation and reparation (prayascitta) may not seem central to the history of the Mantramarga, but they provide a fascinating angle from which to view the evolution of this broad religious tradition. Instead of focussing on the evolution and philosophical defence of Saiva doctrines, or on the examination of ritual practices and of theories developed to justify and shore up such practices, this study puts the spotlight instead on social dimensions of the religion. This book contains a first edition and translation of a South Indian compendium of Saiva expiation rituals compiled by Trilocanasiva, a twelfth-century theologian celebrated for his Siddhantasaravali, a metrical treatise on the Saivasiddhanta that is still traditionally studied in the Tamil-speaking South today. Trilocana does not reveal the sources from which he quotes, many of which are lost to us, but an earlier Northern treatise on the same theme from Malwa by a certain Hrdayasiva consists only in large labeled quotations, typically whole chapters, from those sources. A Nepalese palm-leaf manuscript kept in Cambridge that is dated to 1157 ad may be the earliest surviving codex to transmit Hrdayasiva's text and we have included a complete transcription of that manuscript as an appendix. A combined quarter-verse-index helps readers to navigate both Trilocana's and Hrdayasiva's works. Our introduction attempts to trace the social developments within the Saivasiddhanta that give context to the evolution of Saiva reparatory rites.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 607 pages : 25 cm. This volume presents several detailed studies of the commentary traditions of South India with a particular emphasis on Tamil, but extended to Sanskrit and Telugu as well. The importance of commentaries for our understanding of classical Indian languages and their literatures has long been acknowledged, but rarely have the commentaries themselves, especially minor ones, been the subject of systematic study. Contributors to this volume begin to remedy this desideratum in several ways. Some describe the specific methods employed by particular commentators and offer translations of passages, many of which have never before been rendered into English. Others examine what impact ancient commentators have had on the development of modern philological and lexicographical tools. More broadly, the role of the commentary in textual exegesis is taken up by several authors, and, in one case, this has led to an extension of the very notion of a commentary to include translation. This volume will serve as an important reference point for further research into commentarial traditions both in India and around the world.

Bhatt, who contributed to pioneering research into the history of Śaivism in the French institutions of research in Pondicherry, notably through his editions of Sanskrit works of the Śaivasiddhānta and through his work of gathering the largest collection of Śaiva manuscripts worldwide, recognised as a Memory of the World collection by UNESCO in 2005. After a preface about N.R. Bhatt's life and a bibliography of his uvre, sixteen contributions by colleagues and disciples cover aspects of the history of tantrism, of Śaiva ritual and doctrine. Two more articles deal with iconography and one last contribution publishes an eighteenth-century account of the siege of Pondicherry in 1778.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Statistical n-gram language models are widely used for their state of the art performance in a continuous speech recognition system. In a domain based scenario, the sequences vary at large for expressing same context by the speakers. But, holding all possible sequences in training corpora for estimating n-gram probabilities is practically difficult. Capturing long distance dependencies from a sequence is an important feature in language models that can provide non zero probability for a sparse sequence during recognition. A simpler back-off n-gram model has a problem of estimating the probabilities for sparse data, if the size of n gram increases. Also deducing knowledge from training patterns can help the language models to generalize on an unknown sequence or word by its linguistic properties like noun, singular or plural, novel position in a sentence. For a weaker generalization, n-gram model needs huge sizes of corpus for training. A simple recurrent neural network based language model approach is proposed here to efficiently overcome the above difficulties for domain based corpora. 60 pp. Englisch.
