Ce livre soulève enfin, sans esprit de polémique, la chape de plomb qui pesait sur ce passé qualifié "…d'infâme". En 1822, l'abbé Grégoire accordait la qualification de négrier à tout individu se rendant complice, de près ou de loin, du crime de la traite, et, un siècle plus tard, l'historien Léon Vignols, à tout port armant à la traite, sans considération de taille.
