B/w illustrations by Glenn Wolff. Introduction by Verlyn Klinkenborg. Crease to front cover, slight browning but good second-hand paperback. "Since before World War II, the New York Times has dedicated a column to hunting and fishing, originally calling it "Wood, Field and Stream." By the mid-1970s, perhaps to reflect a transformation in both the sporting and physical landscapes, the column had changed names to the less woodsy but more encompassing "Outdoors." During the first part of the column's existence, material was provided by the full-time columnists, of which there were eventually four. Subsequently, material was solicited from a wide variety of free-lance writers of quality who covered all manner of angling, freshwater and salt. Contributors include: Nick Lyons, Pete Bodo, Verlyn Klinkenborg, Ernest Schwiebert, Stephen Sautner, Peter Kaminsky, Nelson Bryant, Nicholas Karas, Patricia Leigh Brown, John Van Vliet, Adam Clymer, Greg Thomas, Thomas McGuane, Ernest Schwiebert, robert H. Boyle, James Gorman, Paul Guernsey, Craig Springer, C.J. Chivers, John Waldman, Margot Page, Bob Butz, Dave Taft, Ray Ottulich, Barbara Lloyd, James Prosek, Ken Schultz. A good anthology with plenty to get your teeth into. .

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Upriver and Downstream gathers seventy columns about fishing?from freshwater to saltwater, from small ponds to the Great Lakes, from the Pacific Northwest to post-Soviet Russia?written for the ?Outdoors? column of the New York Times.Contributors include such celebrated names as Nick Lyons, Thomas McGuane, Nelson Bryant, Peter Kaminsky, Ernest Schweibert, and Robert H. Boyle. Short, evocative, informative, and entertaining, here are pieces about fly-fishing for wild brook trout, bait-fishing for striped bass, casting into tailwaters, or angling in midwinter. The settings range from Hudson River piers to the Florida Everglades, from Iceland to the Amazon, and the fish include everything from the common sunfish to the esoteric paddlefish. These engaging essays remind us of what fishing is all about: companionship and solitude, challenge and relaxation, nature and technology, from coast-to-coast to around the globe.
