[ circa 1874-1880 ? ], 4 pp. Exceptionnel exemplaire de l'édition origina…le de la biographie très détaillée d'Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), l'inventeur du saxophone et du saxhorn, dédicacé par l'auteur et enrichi d'un billet autogaphe signé d'Adolphe Sax monté en tête : "Mon cher ami, la Cour en audience solennelle vient de prononcer ma réhabilitation". L'exemplaire est enrichi d'une superbe dédicace d'Oscar Comettant à l'écrivain Jules Lecomte : "Acceptez, cher Mr Jules Lecomte, cet exemplaire d'une histoire commencée au moment où le héros qui en est le sujet semblait ne plus tenir à ce monde que par un fil, le bistouri. Le bistouri a été écarté, le héros se porte à merveille, en vie [. ] sa vie, ce qui, je l'espère, n'offusquera personne, pas même la faculté de médecine qui l'avait déclaré mort, et même un peu enterré, je crois. Paris, 19 décembre 1859". On joint un "Appel au Public" d'Adolphe Sax dans lequel il demande le soutien du public contre ses contrefacteurs, et évoque son deuxième dépôt de bilan en 1873 ainsi que les effets néfastes de la "dissimulation d'une réhabilitation légalement établie", ce qui fait écho aux termes de son billet autographe. Né à Bordeaux, le musicologue Oscar Comettant (1819-1898) fut aussi un voyageur fameux (notamment aux Etats-Unis, au Danemark ou en Australie), plus intéressé aux institutions, à la vie politique et à l'éducation qu'aux grands paysages. Comettant sait être didactique (il use souvent de dialogues fictifs très accessibles pour exposer les sujets les plus complexes) et précis dans cet ouvrage étonnant, publié alors que son contemporain Adolphe Sax n'avait que 56 ans ; mais Sax avait alors déjà inventé le saxophone, le saxhorn, le saxotrombas, développé le clairon et les ancêtres du trombone à coulisse et du saxtubas, et perfectionné le hautbois ; en 1876, il inventera le tuba wagnérien. Etat très satisfaisant (petits mq. de cuir aux mors en coiffes, petit accroc sans mq. à un feuillet du prospectus, petites mouill. marginales, bon exemplaire par ailleurs) pour cet exemplaire exceptionnel provenant de la bibliothèque de l'écrivain Jules Lecomte (1810-1864) et qui fut vendu en 1864 lors de la dispersion aux enchères de ses nombreux livres (on le retrouve sous le numéro 112 du "Catalogue" de cette vente).
