Livorno Cruciale inizia con questo numero le proprie pubblicazioni come rivista d'arte e di cultura attenta alle vicende della Livorno contemporanea. Un titolo così perentorio richiede qualche spiegazione: non sfugge il richiamo a…d uno storico saggio di Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti che affermava la centralità del dipanarsi della storia artistica di una città, in quel caso Bologna, dal moderno al contemporaneo. La rivista propone precise scelte di campo: ricade sotto la nostra attenzione la totalità dei fenomeni visivi che hanno segnato la vicenda artistica della città nel secolo appena trascorso e nell'attualità del XXI. Non vi è in tale scelta l'assunto che si possa o si debba trovare in tutto questo un filo di continuità, piuttosto vi è l'esigenza di creare possibili genealogie di fenomeni artistici, assumendo come privilegiato punto di osservazione quello di una città come Livorno, attraversata nella sua storia recente da numerose pulsioni, in costante dibattersi tra aneliti verso l'esterno e chiusure nel rassicurante mondo della provincia. E se al momento attuale ravvisiamo nelle scelte compiute dalla cultura ufficiale cittadina proprio la strada della chiusura, Livorno Cruciale si pone innanzitutto come ricerca di tutte quelle esperienze e quei fermenti che nella storia recente e nell'attualità hanno postulato una dimensione non provinciale del fare artistico. Non è senza significato, proprio nell'idea di seguire possibili genealogie non provinciali, che si sia scelto come primo argomento il tema della grafica pubblicitaria, analizzata nelle più diverse manifestazioni dai raffinati affiches di Leonetto Cappiello, alle pubblicità di ispirazione vagamente neorealista di Cafiero Filippelli, alle recenti prove grafiche di un quotidiano, nel caso specifico il giornale cittadino Il Tirreno, per approdare al web design e quindi al disegno dei siti internet. Nel mentre la rivista stava per andare in stampa è mancato Stefano Fugazza, uno dei maggiori storici dell'arte italiana, direttore della Galleria d'Arte Moderna Ricci Oddi di Piacenza: amico carissimo aveva discusso con noi il progetto di questa rivista in uno dei suoi soggiorni livornesi e aveva accettato di collaborarvi. Questa nostra fatica è dedicata a Stefano. Dario Matteoni.

Se infatti Gino Romiti inaugurava negli anni Venti una geniale iniziativa commerciale nel suo studio-galleria, tra le sale di Bottega d'Arte avveniva l'epico confronto tra la pittura livornese e il Novecento Italiano, finché un promotore del gusto quale Bruno Giraldi garantiva nuove strategie per la diffusione delle avanguardie. Proseguono nel 2000 una tale prestigiosa tradizione tutte quelle gallerie che consentono, tra esposizioni monografiche, rassegne, premi, conferenze, da una parte l'approfondimento della stagione postmacchiaiola e novecentesca dall'altra, il rilancio e la diffusione delle avanguardie storiche, senza escludere infine momenti di illuminate e coraggiose proposte di giovani esordienti e non.

In studying one of the world's oldest and most enduring musical cultures, academics have consistently missed one of the richest forms of Chinese cultural expression: performed narratives. Francesca R. Sborgi Lawson explores the relationships between language and… music in the performance of four narrative genres in the city of Tianjin, China, based upon original field research conducted in the People's Republic of China in the mid 1980s and in 1991. The author emphasizes the unique nature of oral performances in China: these genres are both musical and literary and yet are considered to be neither music nor literature. Lawson employs extensive examples of the complex interaction of music and language in each genre, all the while relating those analyses to broader cultural issues and to patterns of social relationships. The narrative arts known as shuochang (speaking-singing) are depicted as genres that constitute a unique communicative discourse"the communication of stories in song. The genres subsumed under the native conception of shuochang include Tianjin Popular Tunes, Beijing Drumsong, Clappertales and Comic Routines. The maximum utilization of shuo (speaking) and chang (singing) in all their varying manifestations constitutes the vitality of the traditional narrative arts in the city of Tianjin"the center for these arts in North China. The variety of narrative forms provides entertainment for audiences representing all social strata of Chinese society. The author argues that Chinese narrative traditions represent a foundation from which certain Chinese literary and operatic traditions have borrowed, such as how the novels from the Ming-Qing period draw on the performed narrative arts both in style and in content. Hence, an understanding of performed narratives is not only useful to scholars in Chinese literature and music, but also to scholars interested in broadening their understanding of China generally.
