Hij heeft deze mens een gezicht gegeven, dat van de laatste mens. Deze zoekt het geluk, maar vindt veeleer onvrede, die afgewenteld wordt op de ander. De ander, wie dan ook…, heeft het gedaan; hem treft het verwijt, de beschuldiging. Zo'n ander beheerst de menselijke verbeelding en herinnering; het maakt hem tot een obsessie. De mens als maat ontrafelt het problematische van de laatste mens, maar maakt ook duidelijk hoe Nietzsche het probleem van het ressentiment wil overwinnen. Hij zoekt de weg van de zelfkennis, kennis die bevrijdt van de obsessie. De maat die de mens moet vinden staat voor matiging, zelfbeheersing en evenwicht. Zelfkennis en maat maken het mogelijk het bestaan als een uitdaging te zien; bij het wegvallen van de traditionele zedelijkheid vormen ze voor Nietzsche ook de basis van het samenleven.

Sybe Schaap (geboren in 1946), onder meer hoogleraar waterschapbeheer aan de TU Delft en lid van de Eerste Kamer voor de VVD, schenkt in deze uitgave uitge…breide aandacht aan dit verschijnsel. Hij heeft geconstateerd dat momenteel vele Nederlanders door boosheid gedreven worden. Een belangrijk filosoof voor hem is Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), die dit verschijnsel reeds te berde bracht. Bij rancune neemt de burger zelf een slachtofferrol aan en tracht de schuld van vele misstanden in de maatschappij bij anderen te leggen. Een ideale toestand in het verleden of een betere toekomst zijn vaak het uitgangspunt. Schaap noemt allerlei stromingen zoals het fascisme, nationaal-socialisme, communisme, het neo-marxisme van de Frankfurter Schule en het populisme van de PVV van Wilders als voorbeelden. Hij beschouwt dit ressentiment als gevaarlijk en noemt middelen om dit fenomeen terug te dringen. De auteur legt wel erg de nadruk op dit verschijnsel om bepaalde politieke bewegingen te karakteriseren.
