Slight wear to edges and corners, with bumping at head and heel of spine. Signature of Bidlack on pastedown, and of another former owner on flyleaf. Page edges are slightly darkened. The American edition of rules the Vatican Library used for cataloging its collection of printed works.

Three volumes (complete). title page, xvi, 422pp in volume 1; title page and pages numbered 423 to 847 in volume 2; and a title page with pages numbered 1 to 356 in volume 3. The first two volumes appear to contain the greek texts with latin commentary and volume 3 seems to contain the texts in latin plus lexicon and index. Sophocles (c.496-c.406 BCE), born at Colonus to a wealthy manufacturing family, was one of the great Athenian tragedians. Only seven of Sophocles' tragedies are extant. The text in the first two volumes is in Greek with notes in Latin; and in the third volume the text is in Latin with Fragments in Latin and Greek. There is a lexicon and index at the end of volume 3. The three volumes for sale edited and with notes by the French classical scholar Richard François Philippe Brunck (1729-1803) and Gottfried Heinrich Schaefer (1764-1840). The three volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary or slightly later half leather over cloth covered boards with gold titling on leather labels on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some expected shelf wear and some staining to the cloth and scuffing to the leather on the spines and around the corners. a little damage and loss to the leather on the corner tips. The contents are tight and clean apart from a a few small marks and a little scattered light foxing, generally on some of the early and later pages in each volume.There are pencil notes on some pages in volume 2 and a very few in volume 1. The endpapers are stained around the edges and corners where colour has been taken from the leather binding of the books. There is a name, date and a monogram stamp on the front fixed endpaper in all three voumes and a name and date is also written on the front free endpaper of volume 3. There may be a few other minor faults that have been missed . PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy and valuable set and so extra postage may be required.
