This offering is an ex-library copy, in very good condition, of Typee written by Herman Melville with 8 beautifully done, color plates by Mead Schaeffer. The frontispiece, particularly fetching, has been tipped in. This copy was published by Hodder & Stoughton Limited (so it's a British publication) but no date of publication is given. It looks to be of 1920's or early 1930's vintage. The book has no dust jacket and is in very good condition but for the library markings and one of the color plates is loose from the binding. This is from the Bluffton College Library and they did their part in attempting to preserve the book. They put a nice wide piece of clear-tape on the spine, then reinforced the front hinge, and the book has benefited from the maintenance. It's in great shape for the years and having been a library book. Of course, Typee isn't the most popular of Melville's works either, which I suppose has helped a bit.

Based on the real life events depicted in the 'Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex' and the legend of 'Mocha Dick', an albino sperm whale whose killing is described in the May 1839 issue of 'The Knickerbocker' magazine, it is the story of a wandering sailor by the name of Ishmael and his voyage aboard the whaling ship the 'Pequod.' Paper residue from old jacket protector to pastedowns with pocket to rear free endpaper. Front hinge is split with mull showing, but still holds. Tear to top of table of contents. Some ocassional marks, stains thorughout book with more rippling and fint staining towards top as you progress through the book.
