Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Mead Schaeffer (illustrator). This offering is an ex-library copy, in very good condition, of Typee written by Herman Melville with 8 beautifully done, color plates by Mead Schaeffer. The frontispiece, particularly fetching, has been tipped in. This copy was published by Hodder & Stoughton Limited (so it's a British publication) but no date of publication is given. It looks to be of 1920's or early 1930's vintage. The book has no dust jacket and is in very good condition but for the library markings and one of the color plates is loose from the binding. This is from the Bluffton College Library and they did their part in attempting to preserve the book. They put a nice wide piece of clear-tape on the spine, then reinforced the front hinge, and the book has benefited from the maintenance. It's in great shape for the years and having been a library book. Of course, Typee isn't the most popular of Melville's works either, which I suppose has helped a bit.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Schaeffer, Mead (illustrator). Neuware - A renewed interest in 'Moby-Dick' in the early 20th century would help to establish it as an outstanding work of Romanticism and the American Renaissance, firmly placing it amongst the greatest of all American novels. Based on the real life events depicted in the 'Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex' and the legend of 'Mocha Dick', an albino sperm whale whose killing is described in the May 1839 issue of 'The Knickerbocker' magazine, it is the story of a wandering sailor by the name of Ishmael and his voyage aboard the whaling ship the 'Pequod.' Commanded by the monomaniacal Captain Ahab, a man who is obsessed with revenge against a white whale of enormous size and ferocity, the 'Pequod' and its crew are tasked with the singular goal of the capture and killing of the whale, whatever the cost. 'Moby-Dick' is a novel rich with symbolism, full of complex themes, whose composition defies convention. A commercial and critical failure during the author's lifetime, this classic whaling adventure would ultimately secure the literary legacy of Herman Melville. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, includes an introduction by William S. Ament, and is illustrated by Mead Schaeffer.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket as Issued. An attractive Period Rebound in 1/4 leather, with Raised Spine Bands, Gilt Spine title, and Marbled Boards. Scarce thus. Some light rubbing to marbling, and some light wear at upper corner tip. Overall, in Very Good+ condition. Captain Ahab's obsessive, vengeful quest for a giant white sperm whale, Moby Dick, that took his leg, narrated by sailor Ishmael, blending a thrilling sea adventure with deep dives into philosophy, religion, and the harsh realities of 19th-century whaling, exploring themes of obsession, fate, humanity, and the unknown. The significance of the 1942 Dodd, Mead & Company edition of Moby Dick lies in its exquisite, full-page color plates by illustrator Mead Schaeffer. Schaeffer's illustrations are known for their realistic style, focusing on the details of the ship, the whaling process, and the characters' appearances. This provided a distinct visual interpretation of the novel for its readers. In essence, the 1942 Dodd, Mead edition is significant as an aesthetically rich, illustrated version that reflects the novel's growing cultural importance and appeal to both general readers and collectors in the mid-20th century.
