Carl Sigismund Kunth was Professor, Botanist, Professor of botany at the University of Berlin, Vice President of the Berlin botanical garden, Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and One of the first to study and categorise plants from the American continents. c. 1850. Lithography on paper with stains and water damage in the right bottem corner, 170 x 150, pasted on a bigger sheet of cardboard, 340 x 240 mm.[NL] Martin Hinrich (ook: Heinrich) Lichtenstein (17801857) was een Duitse arts, ontdekkingsreiziger en zoöloog, vooral bekend vanwege zijn werk in Zuid-Afrika en als directeur van de Zoologischer Garten in Berlijn, een van de oudste dierentuinen ter wereld. In 1802 vertrok Lichtenstein naar de Kaapkolonie (Zuid-Afrika), waar hij een tijd als militair arts werkte. Zijn reisverslagen gaven Europa een nieuw beeld van de Kaapse natuur en inheemse volken (zoals de Khoikhoi en Xhosa). Lichtenstein was vanaf 1811 hoogleraar zoölogie in Berlijn. Hij had een grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van de natuurwetenschappen in Pruisen. Gemaakt door J.C.
