Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. Special Edition. 1897, Fair/Good Condition, Hardcover Illustrated Cloth Boards, 245pp + Photo's & Illustrations Provenance: from the library of Maurice Ruben of Pittsburgh, a prominent Jewish businessman whose conversion to Christianity became widely publicized in American missionary circles during the late nineteenth century. Ruben's story, involving family conflict, institutional commitment, and subsequent evangelistic work, was frequently cited as a notable conversion narrative. Rare first edition of Christian Obligations to the Jews, compiled by Benjamin A. M. Schapiro, founder of the Brooklyn Christian Mission to the Jews, and published by subscription in 1897. The volume contains numerous portraits of Jewish converts and missionary workers and is an important document of Jewish-Christian relations in late nineteenth-century America. The work reflects the activities of the nineteenth-century Protestant missions directed at Jewish communities, a movement that was highly controversial. While missionary organizations viewed such efforts as a religious duty, many Jewish communities regarded them as an attack on Jewish identity and communal continuity. As a result, publications such as this provide valuable insight into one of the most sensitive and contested aspects of Jewish-Christian relations in the period. NOTES ON CONDITION Illustrated cloth boards with light surface soiling and minor handling wear. Front and rear internal hinges beginning to crack, the binding remains intact. Front flyleaf starting to loosen from the binding. General age-related wear consistent with the book's age and use. See Photo's.…
