Sheet music for the song recorded by the Chicago-based pop group Spanky and Our Gang on Mercury Records. "If you'd take the train with me, uptown to the misery, of ghetto streets in morning light, it's always night, take a window seat, put down your Times, you can read between the lines, just meet the faces that you meet, behind the window's shade". Born and raised in New York City, Scharf (1941-2007) was a prolific studio musician in New York City in the 1960s. He was co-producer of Spanky and Our Gang, which made the song the title song of their second album. The song has been recorded by several musicians over the years from Odetta to Dione Warwick. The New York Urban Coalition adopted the song as their theme song, and New York City Mayor John Lindsay used it as campaign song when he successfully ran for re-election.
